The Complications of Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

Vox Sanguinis, 1984
AbstractWe reviewed a series of 181 patients who were treated with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) a total of 1,389 times. Complications were associated with 22 (1.6%) of the procedures and involved 20 (11%) of the patients. Six of the complications were of a technical nature and did not affect the medical conditions of the patients.

Therapeutic plasma exchange in Casablanca

Transfusion and Apheresis Science, 2008
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an extracorporeal blood purification method for the treatment of diseases in which pathological proteins have to be eliminated. In the aim to demonstrate our single center activity, we analyzed our data since 2 years.Between years 2002 and 2005, 104 TPE procedures were performed on 42 patients.

Complications of therapeutic plasma exchange

Clinical & Laboratory Haematology, 1985
We reviewed complications associated with 1211 therapeutic plasma exchanges done on 132 patients. Complications were encountered during 148 (12%) procedures and involved 64 (48.5%) patients. Most of the complications were minor in nature but in 17 (12.9% of patients) cases the patient developed serious or potentially serious complications.

Therapeutic Plasmapheresis and Plasma Exchange

CRC Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 1986
Plasma exchange is a process in which large volumes of plasma, usually equivalent to one plasma volume, are exchanged with donor plasma or a plasma substitute. This permits the removal of antibody, immune complexes, inflammatory mediators, paraproteins, drugs, toxins, and other plasma constituents.

Therapeutic plasma exchange

1985
The terms ‘plasma exchange’ and ‘plasmapheresis’ have been used interchangeably in the literature. This is regrettable as the two words have different meanings and derivations. The word ‘apheresis’ is derived from the Greek word aphairesis which basically means to remove or withdraw.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange: An Underutilized Therapeutic Modality?

Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, 2003
Abstract:  Since its clinical availability approximately 25 years ago, therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has become recognized as appropriate primary therapy for many diverse medical conditions. In some aspects TPE has been constrained in its use according to schedules of efficacy.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in Treatment of Adrenoleukodystrophy

Therapeutic Apheresis, 2000
Abstract: Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is an X‐linked disorder of metabolism of very long‐chain fatty acids (VLCFA) with a frequency of up to 1:20,000 in males. VLCFA C 24:0 and C 26:0 accumulate in the cholesterolester and ganglioside fraction in plasma and red cells.

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

2008
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an extracorporeal blood purification technique designed for the removal of large molecular weight substances from plasma. Large molecular weight substances equilibrate slowly between the vascular space and the interstitium.
