The terms ‘plasma exchange’ and ‘plasmapheresis’ have been used interchangeably in the literature. This is regrettable as the two words have different meanings and derivations. The word ‘apheresis’ is derived from the Greek word aphairesis which basically means to remove or withdraw.

Complications of therapeutic plasma exchange
Clinical & Laboratory Haematology, 1985We reviewed complications associated with 1211 therapeutic plasma exchanges done on 132 patients. Complications were encountered during 148 (12%) procedures and involved 64 (48.5%) patients. Most of the complications were minor in nature but in 17 (12.9% of patients) cases the patient developed serious or potentially serious complications.

Therapeutic Plasmapheresis and Plasma Exchange
CRC Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 1986Plasma exchange is a process in which large volumes of plasma, usually equivalent to one plasma volume, are exchanged with donor plasma or a plasma substitute.
