Vicarious calibration of ASTER thermal infrared bands
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2005The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on the Terra satellite has five bands in the thermal infrared (TIR) spectral region between 8-12 /spl mu/m. The TIR bands have been regularly validated in-flight using ground validation targets.

Thermal saturation of band transport in a superlattice
Physical Review Letters, 1990Thermal saturation of band transport in a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice miniband is observed for the first time. The Drude conductivity of the miniband is measured as a function of temperature. As the temperature is raised so that ${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{B}}$T is significantly larger than the miniband width the conductivity is strongly quenched.

System-Level, Unified In-band and Out-of-band Dynamic Thermal Control
2010 39th International Conference on Parallel Processing, 2010High-density computer racks become increasingly commonplace in supercomputing centers and data centers. With tight integration of high-powered computing components in the racks, hot spots or pockets of elevated temperatures on the chips and system can be easily formed when room air circulation is not effective.

Long-term band-to-band calibration stability of MODIS thermal emissive bands
SPIE Proceedings, 2013The Terra and Aqua MODIS instruments have operated continuously for over 12 and 10 years respectively and are key contributors to the NASA Earth Observing System mission. The calibration for the 16 thermal emissive bands (TEB) is maintained on-orbit through scan-by-scan observations of a temperature controlled blackbody and deep space.

Shear Band Formation due to a Thermal Flux Inhomogeneity
SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, 1997Summary: The one-dimensional model for the unidirectional shearing of a slab is investigated for the situation in which localized plastic deformation is induced by an inhomogeneity in the thermal flux. The problem is treated as a perturbation of the elastic solution, which persists until plastic deformation becomes significant.

In non-metal materials, phonon transport is the main mechanism of heat transfer and contributes to the most of thermal conductivity. This chapter describes the heat conduction from microscopic and mesoscopic levels, and presents some basic ideas of calculating thermal conductivities from the Boltzmann equation and the concept of engineering phonon band

Thermal expansion contributions to band gap and band offset temperature dependencies
Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology B: Microelectronics and Nanometer Structures Processing, Measurement, and Phenomena, 1991Using a thermodynamic approach, we examine the role thermal expansion plays in determining the temperature dependence of band gaps and band offsets. Because of the large variation in the standard volume of electrons (or, equivalently, variation in conduction-band deformation potential) with symmetry of the conduction band, most of the band-gap ...

Thermalization in energy band tails
Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 1972Abstract The rate equations for carriers injected into an amorphous semiconductor are considered for a simple model with radiative recombination of injected electron and holes and with emission and absorption of optical phonons of a single energy. The approximate energy dependence of the rate coefficients is calculated for a model of the band tail ...
