Thermal Processing – Specialized Calculations

2021
Often, textbooks on thermal processing can overpower the reader with material that may be beyond the scope of what they actually need. However, omitting this material may be problematic for those who have an appreciation of microbiology and would welcome strengthening their awareness of the linkage between microbiology and food processing.

Correlation Function Calculation of Thermal Conductivity

Physical Review, 1962
Recent theories of transport in fluids express the thermal conductivity in terms of correlation functions of the thermal flux. It is shown that such an expression for the thermal conductivity reduces to that conventionally obtained by use of the Boltzmann transport equation for phonon scattering in crystals, if the rate of change of phonon occupation ...

Thermal Calculations for Bridge Design

Journal of the Structural Division, 1975
A straightforward method is shown for calculating thermal stresses in bridges. Unsteady temperature distributions are obtained from numerical solutions of the one-dimensional unsteady heat equation, and comparison with experiment seems to validate the simplifying assumption that horizontal heat movements are small enough to be ignored.

Thermal Plume Area Calculation

Journal of the Energy Division, 1982
A simple formula for the surface area of a thermal plume is proposed, appropriate for application to a depth-limited surface discharge. The formula is based upon thermodynamic and kinematic considerations neglecting hydrodynamics, and will therefore overpredict by the extent to which hydromechanical dilution affects plume size.

On thermal stress calculation

Communications in Applied Numerical Methods, 1986
AbstractLeast squares smoothing is applied to thermal strain calculation. The smoothing procedure eliminates apparent errors in thermal stresses due to mismatch of thermal and mechanical strain orders which facilitates direct evaluation of results. General procedures are developed and demonstrated for two‐dimensional isoparametric elements.

Dynamic calculation of thermal bridges

Energy and Buildings, 1997
Abstract Thermal bridges play a relatively large role in heat loss with increasing thermal insulation level of building envelope. In this paper, multi-dimensional dynamic models are set up to predict the thermal performances of thermal bridges using a frequency response method.

Thermal Process Calculations

1993
Inactivation of microorganisms by heat is a fundamental operation in food preservation. The concepts presented in this chapter are applicable not only in canning but in any process where heat is used to inactivate microorganisms and induce chemical changes which affect quality.

Calculation methods for thermal analysis

Polymer Science U.S.S.R., 1983
Abstract A description is given of a method of analysing experimental results obtained in thermal degradation of polymers. The method is based on the continuous weighing of the sample with linear increase of temperature. Methods of calibration of the device are described.

Theoretical Calculation of Thermal Transmittance

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2016
The article is focused on the theoretical calculation of thermal transmittance for new plastic window frame. Constant making the thermos-technical requirements stricter lays higher demands on improvement of window frames which the weakest element from the point of heat engineering.

Power Loss and Thermal Analysis for High-Power High-Speed Permanent Magnet Machines

IEEE transactions on industrial electronics (1982. Print), 2020
For high-speed permanent magnet machines (HSPMMs), the permanent magnet (PM) is more likely to suffer irreversible demagnetization because the heat dissipation is serious in the HSPMMs, especially for the high-power machines.
