Multiscale modeling of heat conduction in graphene laminates

open access: yes, 2017
We developed a combined atomistic-continuum hierarchical multiscale approach to explore the effective thermal conductivity of graphene laminates. To this aim, we first performed molecular dynamics simulations in order to study the heat conduction at ...

Maillard Type Reaction for Electroless Copper Plating onto Ceramic Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents the manufacturing of copper‐plated ceramic nanoparticles in an environmentally friendly way. Supported by organic functionalizations with pectin an electroless plating step can be performed. Sustainable reagents like xylose, and several amino acids are used for the reduction process.

Icephobic Gradient Polymer Coatings Coupled with Electromechanical De‐icing Systems: A Promising Ice Repellent Hybrid System

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid system for de‐icing made of gradient polymer coatings, deposited on aluminum coupled with an electromechanical system, is demonstrated as an effective and durable strategy for reducing drastically ice adhesion. The system is capable of detaching ice blocks over the coating in less than 1 s, regardless of the ice type and covered area ...

Impact of Iron Contamination on Liquid Properties and Microstructural Evolution in AlSi20

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Recycled aluminum is much more energy conservative and sustainable than primary aluminum. However, the iron contamination in secondary aluminum is vastly responsible for the degradation of the material properties. Herein, it is aimed to evaluate the influence of iron contamination in hypereutectic Al–Si alloy through thermodynamic as well as ...

Crystal-like thermal transport in amorphous carbon [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Thermal transport properties of amorphous carbon has attracted increasing attention due to its extreme thermal properties: It has been reported to have among the highest thermal conductivity for bulk amorphous solids up to $\sim$ 37 Wm\textsuperscript{-1}K\textsuperscript{-1}, comparable to crystalline sapphire ($\alpha$-Al\textsubscript{2}O ...

Extremely High Thermal Conductivity of Aligned Bulk Carbon Nanotube-Polyethylene Composites [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
The poor thermal conductivity of bulk polymers may be enhanced by combining them with high thermal conductivity materials such as carbon nanotubes. Different from random doping, we find that the aligned carbon nanotube-polyethylene composites (ACPCs) has a high thermal conductivity by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations.

Influence of Cooling Rate on Primary Silicon Size in Hypereutectic Al–Si Alloy Fabricated by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Al–Si alloys are particularly in demand for automotive and electronic applications, thanks to their excellent wear and thermal properties. Nevertheless, when processed by conventional methods with low cooling rates, the coarse primary Si phases are responsible for increasing brittleness and inducing crack propagation.

Spherical Accretion with Anisotropic Thermal Conduction

open access: yes, 2008
We study the effects of anisotropic thermal conduction on magnetized spherical accretion flows using global axisymmetric MHD simulations. In low collisionality plasmas, the Bondi spherical accretion solution is unstable to the magnetothermal instability (
