Nondestructive Testing of Welded Composite Metal Foams

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
X‐ray computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate welded steel–steel composite metal foam (CMF) joints of two density classes. It reports variation in postweld spatial void distribution and correlates it to weld‐induced changes, mechanical performance, and failure within welded CMF panels.

Deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of nickel-based superalloys fabricated by selective laser melting

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
In this study, the thermal deformation behavior of GH3230 alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) was investigated for the first time by isothermal hot compression tests in the temperature range of 850∼1150 °C and the strain rate range of 0.01 ...

The Application of ANN and ANFIS Prediction Models for Thermal Error Compensation on CNC Machine Tools

open access: yes
Thermal errors can have significant effects on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tool accuracy. The errors come from thermal deformations of the machine elements caused by heat sources within the machine structure or from ambient temperature ...

Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Experimental Characterization and Constitutive Modeling of the Effect of Prior Inelastic Strain on the Viscoplastic Behavior of AD730 at 700 °C

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that superalloys used in aircraft engine disks become much more prone to deformation at high temperatures if they have been strained during manufacturing. This effect increases with the level of prior strain but eventually reaches a limit.

R410A Scroll Compressor Design Verification used with Finite Element Analysis

open access: yes, 2012
One ITRI developed R410A scroll type compressor was analyzed in this study by using finite element analysis (FEA). Through ITRI developed scroll type compressor computer software (ITRI_STC), the needed boundary conditions, such as pressure in chambers ...
