Review of ventilation strategies to reduce the risk of disease transmission in high occupancy buildings

open access: yesInternational Journal of Thermofluids, 2020
An unforeseen pandemic is facing the world caused by a corona virus known as SARS-CoV-2. Numerous measures are being put in place to try and reduce the spread of this deadly disease, with the most effective response to the outbreak being mass quarantines,

New Thermal Design Strategy to Achieve an 80-kg-Class Lightweight X-Band Active SAR Small Satellite S-STEP

open access: yesAerospace, 2021
The main objective of the S-STEP (the Small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Technology Experimental Project (S-STEP)) mission is developing an 80-kg-class active X-band SAR observation small satellite. For lighter, smaller, better, and cheaper development

Optimal Designs for Thermal Spraying

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C: Applied Statistics, 2016
SummaryWe consider the problem of designing additional experiments to update statistical models for latent day specific effects. The problem appears in thermal spraying, where particles are sprayed on surfaces to obtain a coating. The relationships between in-flight properties of the particles and the controllable variables are modelled by generalized ...

Challenges in thermal design of industrial single-phase power inverter [PDF]

open access: yesZbornik Radova: Elektrotehnički Institut "Nikola Tesla", 2016
This paper presents the influence of thermal aspects in design process of an industrial single-phase inverter, choice of its topology and components. Stringent design inputs like very high overload level, demand for natural cooling and very wide input ...

The role of a building’s thermal properties on pupils’ thermal comfort in junior school classrooms as determined in field studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Recent thermal comfort research in a light-weight junior school building showed that children were more sensitive to higher temperatures than adults and subsequently that current thermal comfort standards were not appropriate for the assessment of their ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
