The Navier–Stokes approach for thermal EHL line contact solutions

open access: yesTribology International, 2002
Abstract The complicated nature of the EHL-problem has so far forced researchers to develop their own computer codes. These codes are ultimately based on the Reynolds equation, and if thermal EHL-simulations are required, a simultaneous solution of the equation of energy also has to be performed.

Effect of coatings on thermal conditions of EHL

Lubrication Science, 1995
AbstractThe thermal EHD model of rectangular contact has been applied to analysing the effect of coatings on thermal conditions in EHL. The model takes into account variation of oil viscosity along and across the oil film according to the Barus formula. The solution has been obtained by means of the Newton‐Raphson method.

Measurement of EHL temperature by thin film sensors – Thermal insulation effects

Tribology International, 2020
Abstract The temperature of elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) contacts strongly influences fluid friction. The higher the EHL temperature, the lower is the effective lubricant viscosity and hence shear stress. EHL contacts with Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coatings have shown lower fluid friction than EHL contacts without DLC coatings.

Effect of fluid rheology on the thermal EHL under ZEV in line contact

Tribology International, 2015
In this study, thermal EHL performances in line contact under zero entrainment velocity (ZEV) are investigated theoretically by employing Newtonian and Ree–Eyring fluid models. From high to modest surface velocity, both rheology models predict large classical surface dimple and the depth of the surface dimple increases with decrease of the surface ...

Scale and contact geometry effects on friction in thermal EHL: twin-disc versus ball-on-disc [PDF]

open access: yesTribology International, 2021
Plint (IMechE 182 (1):300–306,1967) reported a reduced coefficient of friction with increasing roller sizes in EHL traction measurements. In this study, a similar scale effect has been observed when comparing measured traction curves at the same ...

Traction in EHL Line Contacts Using Free-Volume Pressure-Viscosity Relationship With Thermal and Shear-Thinning Effects

open access: yesJournal of Tribology, 2009
This paper investigates the traction behavior in heavily loaded thermo-elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) line contacts using the Doolittle free-volume equation, which closely represents the experimental viscosity-pressure-temperature relationship and ...

Influences of solid and lubricant thermal conductivity on traction in an EHL circular contact [PDF]

open access: yesTribology International, 2020
The influences of thermal conductivity of both the contacting solids and the lubricant on the traction in a rolling/sliding EHL contact have been studied numerically.

Speeding up the solution of thermal EHL problems

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2002
AbstractThis paper considers the fast solution of large, dense linear systems arising from thermal EHL problems. We present an efficient preconditioner for these, based on a novel combination of wavelet compression with the Schur complement. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of this approach. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
