Application of the Lobatto Quadrature Within Probabilistic Thermal Mixed EHL

ASME/STLE 2009 International Joint Tribology Conference, 2009
Refined solutions of thermal lubrication problems generally require fine mesh and many iteration steps. To solve these difficulties, Elrod and Brewe [1–2] proposed an efficient algorithm based on the use of Lobatto point quadrature. Within this approach, the unknown temperature across the film is written in a series of Legendre polynomials.

Influence of Solid Body Temperature on the Thermal EHL Behavior in Circular Contacts

Journal of Tribology, 2007
In order to investigate the influence of the body temperature of contacting solids on the lubrication performance of machine components, such as gears and roller bearings, a full numerical solution for the thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problem in circular contacts under steady state has been achieved.

Numerical investigation of thermal EHL in elliptical contact under impact motion

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2015
In this work, the thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication in elliptical contact under impact motion is investigated numerically by altering oil viscosity and elliptical ratio. The impact-rebound time is shortened with the increase of the elliptical ratio, while a smaller ambient oil viscosity extends the impact-rebound time. Generally speaking, a larger

Analysis of thermal dynamic micro-EHL considering bearing assembly temperature

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, 2020
To investigate thermal failure of dynamic oil film in cylindrical roller bearings(CRBs), based on the temperature field of CRBs, non-Newtonian dynamic thermal elastohydrodynamic (TEHL) lubricating performance in cylindrical roller bearings was conducted.

Formation Mechanism of Steady Multi-Dimples in Thermal EHL Point Contacts

Journal of Tribology, 2003
With optical interferometry technique, an interesting multi-dimple phenomenon has been discovered under pure-sliding conditions in the point contact between a glass disk and a 3-inch diameter steel ball. At low sliding speeds, two or three stable dimples can be generated in the contact, but at higher sliding speeds, such multi-dimples become unstable ...

Thermal and Non-Newtonian Numerical Analyses for Starved EHL Line Contacts

World Tribology Congress III, Volume 1, 2005
Numerical analyses have been carried out for the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) in line contacts under both fully flooded and starved conditions. The thermal effect and the Ree-Eyring non-Newtonian flow have been taken into account. The relation between the inlet meniscus and the thickness of the available lubricant layer has been investigated ...

A contribution to the thermal effects of DLC coatings on fluid friction in EHL contacts

Lubrication Science, 2018
AbstractDiamond‐like carbon (DLC) coatings are commonly used to reduce boundary and mixed friction in tribological contacts. Recent works at the FZG efficiency gear test rig show that the application of the DLC coating ZrCg (a‐C:H:Zr) on gear flanks reduces the mean coefficient of friction in fluid film lubrication regime by up to 39% compared with ...

Film pressure distributions in point contacts predicted by thermal EHL analyses

Tribology International, 2006
Abstract In general, lubricated rolling/sliding contact fatigue problems have been investigated by assuming Hertzian contact pressure distributions. In this paper, thermal EHL analyses in consideration of the variations in oil properties in all directions within the film have been carried out under conditions of circular and elliptical contacts.

Temperature Distribution and Thermal Degradation of the Lubricant in EHL Line Contact Conjunctions

Journal of Tribology, 1994
Temperatures of the lubricant in the inlet zone, the central contact zone, and the outlet zone of EHL line contact conjunctions were simultaneously calculated for a complete range of sliding conditions by using the new thermal circular non-Newtonian EHL model.
