Focal cryogen insults for inducing segmental osteonecrosis: computational and experimental assessments of thermal fields

Journal of Biomechanics, 2003
Orthopaedic management of femoral head osteonecrosis is a common clinical problem for which there presently is no good solution. Current animal models are inappropriate to study potential new solutions, since it has been difficult to replicate the natural history of structural collapse seen in the human disorder.

Effects of pre-cooling and pre-heating procedures on cement polymerization and thermal osteonecrosis in cemented hip replacements

Medical Engineering and Physics, 2003
Numerical studies were performed to investigate bone cement polymerization, temperature history and thermal osteonecrosis in cemented hip replacements with finite element methods. In this paper, the effects of pre-cooling and pre-heating of the prosthesis and/or the cement prior to implantation were simulated.

Thermal Osteonecrosis of the Rib after Radiofrequency Ablation in the Thorax

Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, 2008
A patient underwent radiofrequency (RF) ablation of a pleural-based pulmonary metastasis from treated hepatocellular carcinoma. Ten months after the procedure, computed tomography and positron emission tomography findings raised the concern of tumor recurrence with invasion of the chest wall, for which the patient underwent thoracotomy with resection ...

Thermal Osteonecrosis Complicating Steinmann Pin Insertion in Plastic Surgery

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1983
Two typical cases of thermal osteonecrosis due to Steinmann pin insertion are presented. Using proper technique, including predrilling or the use of a hand drill, can eliminate the high morbidity problem.
