Failure mechanism and cracking-resistant design of thermal barrier coatings with long life span

open access: yesJournal of Aeronautical Materials, 2022
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are deposited on metallic components to prevent heat flux due to their excellent thermal insulation function. Nowadays, TBCs have become the key core technology of the new generation gas turbines.

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Multiphase interface engineering of thermal plasma synthesized TiC/TiO2 heterostructures for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

open access: yesNano Research
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a promising photocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction owing to its chemical stability and low cost. However, pristine TiO2 suffers from insufficient light absorption and rapid charge recombination, severely constraining

Characterization of Aluminized Layers on Inconel‐738 Alloy: Microstructure, Modeling of Aluminizing Kinetics, and Thermal Behavior

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explored how effective nickel aluminide coatings are obtained in providing oxidation resistance applied to the Inconel 738 alloy, modeling with diffusion models. In the present study, kinetics and thermal behavior of the Inconel 738 alloy were studied by the low‐temperature thermoreactive aluminizing process, which was carried out at 625°C ...

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

Reactive plasma spraying [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Reactive Plasma Spraying (RPS) with a hydrocarbon gas has been studied as a method to improve the mechanical properties of a commercially available 80: 20 nickel-chromium alloy, and subsequently as a method to reduce the oxygen content of sprayed ...

Comparison of Laminar and Turbulent Thermal Plasma Jet Characteristics - A Modeling Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Modeling results are presented to compare the characteristics of laminar and turbulent argon thermal plasma jets issuing into ambient air. The combined-diffusion-coefficient method and the turbulence-enhanced combined-diffusion-coefficient method are ...

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Synthesis of nanostructured MgO powders with photoluminescence by plasma-intensified pyrohydrolysis process of bischofite from brine

open access: yesGreen Processing and Synthesis, 2014
Nanostructured MgO powders were synthesized by an ultra-high temperature pyrohydrolysis process of bischofite (MgCl2·6H2 O) in a radio frequency (RF) induction thermal plasma system.
