Thermal shock and erosion resistant tantalum carbide ceramic material [PDF]
Ceramic tantalum carbide artifacts with high thermal shock and mechanical erosion resistance are provided by incorporating tungsten-rhenium and carbon particles in a tantalum carbide matrix. The mix is sintered by hot pressing to form the ceramic article

High Transient-Thermal-Shock Resistant Nanochannel Tungsten Films
Developing high-performance tungsten plasma-facing materials for fusion reactors is an urgent task. In this paper, novel nanochannel structural W films prepared by magnetron sputtering deposition were irradiated using a high-power pulsed electron beam or ion beam to study their edge-localized modes, such as transient thermal shock resistance.

Packaging of Macroscopic Material Payloads: Needs, Challenges, Concepts, and Future Directions
This review introduces a unified framework that decomposes any macroscopic packaging system into the payload, packaging material, and packaging strategy and combines them into a conceptual packaging equation: packaging strategy = payload + packaging material.

Method of fabricating an abradable gas path seal [PDF]
The thermal shock resistance of a ceramic layer is improved. The invention is particularly directed to an improved abradable lining that is deposited on shroud forming a gas path in turbomachinery.

The thermal shock resistance of solids [PDF]
Abstract The thermal shock resistance of a brittle solid is analysed for an orthotropic plate suddenly exposed to a convective medium of different temperature. Two types of plate are considered: (i) a plate containing a distribution of flaws such as pores, for which a stress-based fracture criterion is appropriate, and (ii) a plate containing a ...

High‐temperature interactions between low‐sulfur Al‐killed Mn–B steel and MgO–C refractories (0 and 50 wt% recyclates) are studied via finger immersion tests (1600 °C). Surface‐active elements influence infiltration. MgO/CaS layer forms, along with spinel and calcium silicate.

Thermal shock resistance behavior of a functionally graded ceramic: Effects of finite cooling rate
This work presents a semi-analytical model to explore the effects of cooling rate on the thermal shock resistance behavior of a functionally graded ceramic (FGC) plate with a periodic array of edge cracks.

Shock reflection and surface effects in the shock tube [PDF]
A thin-film resistance thermometer, mounted on the end-wall of a shock tube, is used to record surface temperatures and heat transfer rates following reflection of the primary shock wave.

The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.
