Smart Electromagnetic Thermites: GO/rGO Nanoscale Thermite Composites with Thermally Switchable Microwave Ignitability

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2021
This effort demonstrates the development of a novel, graphene oxide nanoscale thermite composite with thermally tunable microwave ignitability. A model thermite system containing nanoscale aluminum and nanoscale iron(II) oxide in a stoichiometric ratio (30/70 wt %) was combined with sheets of graphene oxide (GO) or reduced graphene oxide (rGO) using an

Thermite-for-demise (T4D): Experiments and numerical modelling on ball-bearing unit mock-ups containing thermite in an arc-heated wind tunnel [PDF]

open access: yesActa Astronautica
The use of thermite to aid spacecraft demise during atmospheric re-entry has been investigated in the ESA-TRP SPADEXO project. An experimental campaign in DLR's L2K arc-heated wind tunnel facility was dedicated to explore the Thermite-for-Demise concept.

Thermite Sparking in the Offshore Environment

SPE Offshore Europe, 1987
ABSTRACT In flammable and explosive environments, sparks have to be eliminated for reliable operation and safety. Thermite sparking is a comparatively rare phenomenon which produces a relatively hotter spark than friction sparking. It involves aluminum alloys and rusted steel.

Microscale Thermite Reactions

Journal of Chemical Education, 1998
The reaction of aluminum with the oxides of a variety of elements (aluminothermy, or the Goldschmidt process) illustrates exothermic reactions that require a high activation energy. It is also an appropriate experiment with regard to the discussion of Ellingham diagrams. Because it is spectacular, this reaction is a favorite for demonstrations.

Thermite Welding

1993
Abstract Thermite welding (TW) is a fusion welding process in which two metals become bonded after being heated by superheated metal that has experienced an aluminothermic reaction. This article describes the thermite welding principles by presenting equations of the aluminothermic reaction that occurs in thermite welding.
