Directed evolution of enzymes at the crossroads of tradition and innovation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An iterative cycle of data‐driven enzyme optimization comprising four stages: genetic diversification of a template enzyme, expression of protein variants, high‐throughput evaluation, and machine‐learning‐guided redesign of the next variant library.

Weakly nonlocal irreversible thermodynamics - the Guyer-Krumhansl and the Cahn-Hilliard equations

open access: yes, 2001
Examples of irreversible thermodynamic theory of nonlocal phenomena are given, based on generalized entropy current. Thermodynamic currents and forces are identified to derive the Guyer-Krumhansl and Cahn-Hilliard equations.

Thermodynamic matrix exponentials and thermodynamic parallelism

open access: yesPhysical Review Research
Thermodynamic computing exploits fluctuations and dissipation in physical systems to efficiently solve various mathematical problems. It was recently shown that certain linear algebra problems can be solved thermodynamically, leading to a speedup scaling with the matrix dimension.

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Thermodynamic length in a 2-D thermodynamic state space

open access: yes, 2004
The main goal of this paper is to reach an explicit formulation and possible interpretation of thermodynamic length in a thermodynamic state space with two degrees of freedom. Using the energy and entropy metric in a general form, we get explicit results

The Thermodynamics of Mind

open access: yesTrends in Cognitive Sciences
To not only survive, but also thrive, the brain must efficiently orchestrate distributed computation across space and time. This requires hierarchical organisation facilitating fast information transfer and processing at the lowest possible metabolic cost.

Carboxylic‐Acid Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube‐Alkane‐Based Resistive Temperature Sensor for Cold Chain Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a reversible temperature sensor with high switching ratio, ∼103. The device is fabricated using PET‐ITO and carbon nanotube dispersions in alkane. Considering its application in cold chain logistics, a proof‐of‐concept with LED is showcased. Thus, a temperature drop below the threshold temperature (crystallization temperature of the

Coupling different levels of resolution in molecular simulations

open access: yes, 2009
Simulation schemes that allow to change molecular representation in a subvolume of the simulation box while preserving the equilibrium with the surrounding introduce conceptual problems of thermodynamic consistency.
