Supercritical CO2 Power Technology: Strengths but Challenges

open access: yesEnergies
In the late 1960s, a handful of inspired researchers predicted the great potential of supercritical CO2 (“sCO2”) cycles for the production of electricity and highlighted the prospects for dramatic reductions in component sizes and efficiency increases ...

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Performance Analysis of Wave Rotor Combustor Integration into Baseline Engines: A Comparative Study of Pressure-Gain and Work Cycles

open access: yesEnergies
This study presents two concepts for integrating a wave rotor combustor (WRC) into a baseline engine: the wave rotor pressure-gain cycle (WRPGC) and the wave rotor work cycle (WRWC).

Feasibility Study of the CO2 Regenerator Parameters for Oxy-Fuel Combustion Power Cycle

open access: yesInventions, 2022
The atmosphere carbon dioxide content grows subsequently due to anthropogenic factors. It may be considerably mitigated by the development of thermal power plants with near zero emissions.

Optimizing thermodynamic trajectories using evolutionary and gradient-based reinforcement learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Using a model heat engine, we show that neural network-based reinforcement learning can identify thermodynamic trajectories of maximal efficiency. We consider both gradient and gradient-free reinforcement learning.

Development of Ternary Magnesium Alloys for Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Optimizing Oxide Layer Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing of magnesium alloys by laser is difficult because the melting point of the oxide layer is much higher than the evaporation temperature of the metal underneath. Making the oxide layer thinner can solve this problem. Alloying magnesium with strontium makes the oxide layer thinner, especially at 0.5 wt%.

Second Law of Thermodynamics with Discrete Quantum Feedback Control

open access: yes, 2008
A new thermodynamic inequality is derived which leads to the maximum work that can be extracted from multi-heat baths with the assistance of discrete quantum feedback control. The maximum work is determined by the free-energy difference and a generalized

Analysis of Temperature and Stress Distribution on the Bond Properties of Hybrid Tailored Formed Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Hybrid materials enable high‐performance components but are challenging to process. This study explores an inductive heating concept with spray cooling for steel–aluminum specimens in a two‐step process including friction welding and cup backward extrusion.
