The Linking of Solid Mechanics with Thermodynamics through the Mathematics of Differentials
International Journal of Mechanical Engineering Education, 2005Engineers are familiar with the concept of differentials but tend to think of these in an informal sense, that is, as infinitesimally small quantities. It is argued in this paper that differentials should be presented to engineering students in a more formal way. Differentials can be formalised by defining then as functions on tangent spaces.

Thermodynamics in solid mechanics: a commentary
Philosophical Transactions Series A, Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, 2005This commentary on thermodynamics in solid mechanics aims to provide an overview of the main concepts of thermodynamic processes as they apply to, and may be exploited for, studies in nonlinear solid mechanics. We give a descriptive commentary on the (physical) interpretation of these concepts, and relate these where appropriate to behaviour of solids ...

Dependence of Solid-State Metal Battery Thermodynamics on Interfacial Mechanics
ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2021Next generation batteries seek to utilize metal electrodes due to their increased gravimetric and volumetric energy density compared to intercalation electrodes. Single-ion conducting solid electrolytes are viewed as a promising candidate to aid in the adoption of metal electrodes as they are mechanically stiff, possess high ionic conductivity, and ...

We use a coupled thermodynamically consistent framework to model reactive chemo-mechanical responses of solid solutions. Specifically, we focus on chemically active solid solutions that are subject to mechanical effects due to heterogeneous stress distributions.

Irreversible Thermodynamics for Damage Mechanics of Solid Materials
Materials: Processing, Characterization and Modeling of Novel Nano-Engineered and Surface Engineered Materials, 2002In this paper a thermodynamic framework has been presented for damage mechanics of solids materials. Traditional damage mechanics theory uses damage potential function to trace damage evolution. In this framework entropy production is used as a measure of damage in the system.

In this work, chili straw (CS) was pretreated by microwave at 250 W, 406 W, 567 W, and 700 W. The pyrolysis characteristics, kinetics, thermodynamic parameters, and solid reaction mechanism were investigated. The maximum weight loss rate increases from - 24.72%/°C at P0 to - 28.01%/°C at P700 after microwave pretreatment, and the residual mass ...

Structural, thermodynamic, and mechanical properties of WCu solid solutions
Journal of Physics and Chemistry of Solids, 2017Abstract Various properties of W Cu solid solutions are systematically investigated through a combined use of first-principles calculation, cluster expansion, special quasirandom structures (SQS), and lattice dynamics. It is shown that SQS are effective to unravel the intrinsic nature of solid solutions, and that BCC and FCC W 100-x Cu x solid ...

Thermodynamic and mechanical equilibrium morphologies of microasperities on a solid surface
Physics Letters A, 1982Abstract Micron size tapered asperities having a bent or spiralled appearance have been observed in SEM studies of ion bombarded surfaces. We suggest that these forms arise from the relaxation of surface stress σ on what are initially conical asperities.
