Properties of Thermus ruber Strains Isolated from Icelandic Hot Springs and DNA:DNA Homology of Thermus ruber and Thermus aquaticus [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1988
Seventeen pink-pigmented strains of the genus Thermus were isolated from samples collected from thermal areas of Iceland. The strains were examined by using phenotypic characterization and DNA:DNA homology and were compared with recognized strains.

Thiostrepton-resistant mutants of Thermus thermophilus [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2004
Ribosomal protein L11 and its associated binding site on 23S rRNA together comprise one of the principle components that mediate interactions of translation factors with the ribosome. This site is also the target of the antibiotic thiostrepton, which has been proposed to act by preventing important structural transitions that occur in this region of ...

Building Proteins in a Day: Efficient 3D Molecular Reconstruction

open access: yes, 2015
Discovering the 3D atomic structure of molecules such as proteins and viruses is a fundamental research problem in biology and medicine. Electron Cryomicroscopy (Cryo-EM) is a promising vision-based technique for structure estimation which attempts to ...

Recognition of two distinct elements in the RNA substrate by the RNA-binding domain of the T. thermophilus DEAD box helicase Hera [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
DEAD box helicases catalyze the ATP-dependent destabilization of RNA duplexes. Whereas duplex separation is mediated by the helicase core shared by all members of the family, flanking domains often contribute to binding of the RNA substrate.

Protonated Glutamate and Aspartate Side Chains Can Recognize Phosphodiester Groups via Strong and Short Hydrogen Bonds in Biomacromolecular Complexes

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
The highly negatively charged phosphodiester groups of nucleic acids and cyclic (di‐)nucleotides often interact with amino acids containing polar or positively charged sidechains. Due to charge repulsion with their negatively charged carboxylate groups in their side chains, glutamate and aspartate are considered to be detrimental to such interactions ...

Mammalian Tolerance to Amino Acid Heterochirality

open access: yesChemBioChem, Accepted Article.
Organisms use amino acids predominantly in l‐configuration. On the other hand, a series of studies show that a variety of d‐amino acids also occur in mammals and amino acid homochirality is not complete. Mammals de novo synthesize most amino acids with l‐configuration, but serine and aspartate are converted from l‐ to d‐configuration by endogenous ...

Horizontal Gene Transfer in Thermus spp.

open access: yesCurrent Issues in Molecular Biology, 2018
The small amount of genetic content in thermophiles generally limits their adaptability to environmental changes. In Thermus spp., very active horizontal gene transfer (HGT) mechanisms allow the rapid spread of strain-specific adaptive gene modules among the entire population.

Programming Green Light‐Responsive Hydrogels: From Photo‐Weakening to Photo‐Unresponsiveness and Photo‐Strengthening

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 31, Issue 16, March 17, 2025.
The light response of CarHc protein‐based hydrogels can be alterted from photo‐weakening, to photo‐strengthening, or becoming light‐unresponsive depending on the added cofactors AdoCbl and Co2+. Under green light, CarHc tetramers disassembly weakens the hydrogel, while excess AdoCbl crosslinking poly‐histidine tags strengthens it.

Allosteric Inhibition of Thermus Thermophilus Phosphofructokinase [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2010
Thermus thermophilus phosphofructokinase (TtPFK) comes from an extreme thermophile and exhibits entropically-driven inhibition by phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). Interestingly, a PFK from the moderate thermophile Bacillus stearothermophilus also exhibits entropically-driven inhibition, while enthalphically-driven inhibition is observed for PFK from ...
