Horizontal Gene Transfer in Thermus spp.
The small amount of genetic content in thermophiles generally limits their adaptability to environmental changes. In Thermus spp., very active horizontal gene transfer (HGT) mechanisms allow the rapid spread of strain-specific adaptive gene modules among the entire population.

In Vivo Biosynthesis and Direct Incorporation of Non‐Canonical Amino Acids into Proteins
Autonomous cells are engineered biological systems capable of biosynthesising and directly incorporating non‐canonical amino acids (ncAAs) into proteins. These systems have the potential to extend the applicability of the genetic code to enable large‐scale fermentative production of proteins carrying ncAAs.

CarD uses a minor groove wedge mechanism to stabilize the RNA polymerase open promoter complex
A key point to regulate gene expression is at transcription initiation, and activators play a major role. CarD, an essential activator in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is found in many bacteria, including Thermus species, but absent in Escherichia coli. To

Targeting the Tumor Microbiota in Cancer Therapy Basing on Nanomaterials
Intra‐tumoral microbiota, which is a potential component of the tumor microenvironment, has been emerging as a key participant and driving factor in cancer. This article reviews the latest progress in this field, including the microbial community within tumors and its pro‐cancer mechanisms, as well as the anti‐tumor strategies targeting intra‐tumoral ...

Cryo-electron microscopy reveals two distinct type IV pili assembled by the same bacterium
Type IV pili are flexible filaments on the surface of bacteria, consisting of a helical assembly of pilin proteins. Here, Neuhaus et al. show that the bacterium Thermus thermophilus produces two forms of type IV pilus, differing in structure, protein ...

Atypical features of Thermus thermophilus succinate:quinone reductase. [PDF]
The Thermus thermophilus succinate:quinone reductase (SQR), serving as the respiratory complex II, has been homologously produced under the control of a constitutive promoter and subsequently purified.

Supervised Learning of Protein Melting Temperature: Cross‐Species vs. Species‐Specific Prediction
ABSTRACT Protein melting temperatures are important proxies for stability, and frequently probed in protein engineering campaigns, for instance for enzyme discovery and protein optimization. With the emergence of large datasets of melting temperatures for diverse natural proteins, it has become possible to train models to predict this quantity, and the

ABSTRACT The vertebrate gut houses diverse microbial communities that provide insights into their host's ecological and evolutionary histories. Nevertheless, microbiome research has not been distributed equally across host taxonomy, geography and timescales. The millions of fluid‐preserved specimens stored in natural history museums worldwide represent

Allosteric Inhibition of Thermus Thermophilus Phosphofructokinase [PDF]
Thermus thermophilus phosphofructokinase (TtPFK) comes from an extreme thermophile and exhibits entropically-driven inhibition by phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP). Interestingly, a PFK from the moderate thermophile Bacillus stearothermophilus also exhibits entropically-driven inhibition, while enthalphically-driven inhibition is observed for PFK from ...
