Visual writing: Thicken time, transform and dissolve text

Animation Practice, Process & Production, 2012
Abstract This article maps the development of visual writing as a fusion of creative writing, script writing and story visualization to assist in the process of translating thought into animated moving images and sound. The article is based on two keynote lectures I have given in Taipai, Taiwan at the Fermentation in Design conference ...

Time-Periodic Structures and Instabilities in Shear-Thickening Polymer Solutions

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2002
We revisit the problem of flow-induced structural changes in semidilute polystyrene/dioctyl phthalate (PS/DOP) solutions below their theta temperature by focusing on the high-shear-stress regime where thickening occurs. We observe a strong coupling of flow instabilities to the induced structure resulting from the enhanced concentration fluctuations ...

Prediction of oilwell cement thickening times using a cementing model

Advances in Cement Research, 1993
Oilwell cement thickening times are measured by mixing cement and additives and placing them in a consistometer in the laboratory to simulate downhole behaviour. This procedure is often unrepresentative of the practical operation on the rig. There will normally be variations in temperature, additive concentration and slurry density.

Shear thickening and time-dependent phenomena: the case of polyacrylamide solutions

Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 1994
Abstract In this paper, the rheological properties of solutions of high molecular weight partially hydrolysed polyacrylamide in mixtures of glycerol and water are presented. The influence of the amount of glycerol and of salt on the conformation of the macromolecules is studied through the measurement of the reduced viscosity.

Application of Artificial Intelligence in Predicting Cement Thickening Time

Offshore Technology Conference
Abstract Cementing operations consists of placing cement slurries between casing-casing and casing-formation to achieve multiple objectives including zonal isolation, corrosion resistance, isolation of water bearing formations, etc. Cement slurries are tailored in the laboratory environment simulating downhole conditions to achieve the ...

Shear time dependent viscosity of polystyrene-ethylacrylate based shear thickening fluid

Smart Materials and Structures, 2016
In this study, the influence of the shear rate and shear time on the transient viscosity of polystyrene-ethylacrylate based shear thickening fluid (STF) is investigated. If the shear rate is stepwise changed, it is found that both the viscosity and critical shear rate are affected by the shear time.

Effect of Sugar on the Thickening Time of Cement Slurries

SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2007
Abstract Sugar is widely recognized as a cement retarder by the drilling industry and has been used in cementing operations where cement returns are expected on surface. Experts disagree about the effect that sugar has on cement slurries, a few believe that it acts as both an accelerator and a retarder depending on the ...

Time-Related Flow Behaviour of Shear Thickening Systems

1990
The time-related flow behaviour of shear thickening systems was examined in the stressing experiment (stress growth experiment) with subsequent stress relaxation. The observed systems show on relaxation no residual shear stress also in the shear thickening region.

Time-Dependent Rheology of Starch Thickeners and the Clinical Implications for Dysphagia Therapy

Dysphagia, 2007
The viscosity of nonsolid foods and the stability of their viscosity over time is critical in managing dysphagia. The time-dependent viscosity of liquids thickened with starch-based thickeners was measured at constant temperature and shear rate. Viscosity was measured between 30-min intervals of rest (zero shear) over a period of 17 h at 20.0 degrees C.

Shear Thickening and Time-Dependent Rheological Behavior in Aqueous Polyacrylic Ester Dispersions

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 1996
Abstract We have observed, in a commercial aqueous polyacrylic ester dispersion, a shear thickening phenomenon that exhibits time-dependent rheological behavior. The critical shear rate γ c for the shear thickening transition varies with volume fraction, temperature, pH, and particle size distribution, in a manner which indicates that the phenomenon ...
