Minimal resonances in annular non-Euclidean strips [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Differential growth processes play a prominent role in shaping leaves and biological tissues. Using both analytical and numerical calculations, we consider the shapes of closed, elastic strips which have been subjected to an inhomogeneous pattern of ...

Hydraulic conductivity of a dense prehydrated GCL: impact of free swell and swelling pressure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Exposure to liquids with high electrolyte concentrations or high cation valence present in landfill leachates can cause significant increases in hydraulic conductivity of clays due to a reduction in the thickness of the double layer.

Buckling of swelling gels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The patterns arising from the differential swelling of gels are investigated experimentally and theoretically as a model for the differential growth of living tissues.

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

Prediction of Mechanical Performance of Acetylated MDF at Different Humid Conditions

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Change of relative humidity (RH) in surrounding environment can greatly affect the physical and mechanical properties of wood-based panels. Commercially produced acetylated medium density fiberboard (MDF), Medite Tricoya®, was used in this study to ...

Motion of an Adhesive Gel in a Swelling Gradient: a Mechanism for Cell Locomotion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Motivated by the motion of nematode sperm cells, we present a model for the motion of an adhesive gel on a solid substrate. The gel polymerizes at the leading edge and depolymerizes at the rear.

Fluid and Neuroimaging Biomarkers in Microgliopathy Colony‐Stimulating Factor‐1 Receptor‐Related Disorders

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective This study aims to identify both fluid and neuroimaging biomarkers for CSF1R‐RD that can inform the optimal timing of treatment administration to maximize therapeutic benefit, while also providing sensitive quantitative measurements to monitor disease progression.

Influence of nanoparticle on hygroscopic thickness swelling rate of composites from hemp fiber and recycled plastic

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2013
In this study, the effect of nanoparticle on hygroscopic thickness swelling rate of composites from hemp fiber and recycled plastic was investigated. To meet this objective, hemp fiber was mixed with either virgin or recycled polypropylene (PP) at 50% by

An Active and Soft Hydrogel Actuator to Stimulate Live Cell Clusters by Self-folding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The hydrogels are widely used in various applications, and their successful uses depend on controlling the mechanical properties. In this study, we present an advanced strategy to develop hydrogel actuator designed to stimulate live cell clusters by self-
