Numerical Exploration of Thermal Shock Resistance in MgO–C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A mesostructure‐resolved numerical framework is developed to evaluate the thermal shock resistance of MgO–C refractories. By modeling interface debonding under rapid temperature changes and introducing a modified thermal shock parameter that accounts for mesocracks, the study shows how graphite content and aggregate size influence thermal shock ...

Domanic deposits of the Volga-Ural basin – types of section, formation conditions and prospects of oil and gas potential

open access: yesGeoresursy, 2017
The Domanic deposits of the Volga-Ural oil and gas basin are a high-carbon thin-bedded formation capable of both producing hydrocarbons with its own oil and gas bearing strata and concentrating them in separate reservoirs and zones (Stoupakova et al ...

A Topology Optimization Framework for the Inverse Design of Nonlinear Mechanical Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work uses topology optimization to design unit cells for mechanical metamaterials with a prescribed nonlinear stress–strain response. The framework adds contact and postbuckling modeling to synthesize microstructures for three highly nonlinear responses, including pseudoductile behavior, monostable with snap‐through buckling, and bistable ...

Ion-abrasion scanning electron microscopy reveals surface-connected tubular conduits in HIV-infected macrophages.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2009
HIV-1-containing internal compartments are readily detected in images of thin sections from infected cells using conventional transmission electron microscopy, but the origin, connectivity, and 3D distribution of these compartments has remained ...

Resolving the gap and AU-scale asymmetries in the pre-transitional disk of V1247 Orionis

open access: yes, 2013
Pre-transitional disks are protoplanetary disks with a gapped disk structure, potentially indicating the presence of young planets in these systems. In order to explore the structure of these objects and their gap-opening mechanism, we observed the pre ...

Production of MgO/TiC Composites From MgO‐C Recyclates Using Spark Plasma Sintering

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Using the spark plasma sintering technique, MgO/TiC composites are manufactured from recycled MgO‐C refractories stemming from the steel production that were mixed with titanium powder. This article shows, how the size of the Ti grains and their distribution in the powder mixture affect the local carbon concentration in TiC.

A Flexible Ultra-Thin Ultrasonic Transducer for Ice Detection on Curved Surfaces

open access: yesAerospace
Icing phenomena occur on aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under extreme weather conditions. Ultrasonic detection technology is an effective method for measuring ice formation while maintaining the shape of the structure.

Bioinspired Shape‐Memory Hook Fasteners With Programmable Interlocking and Silent Release

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Bioinspired hook fasteners made from epoxy shape‐memory polymers are shown to switch between strong, secure attachment and gentle, silent release when heated. By combining programmable geometry and material response, these adaptive fasteners outperform commercial systems in strength and noise control, enabling new solutions for robotics, medical ...

Visible spectrum extended-focus optical coherence microscopy for label-free sub-cellular tomography

open access: yes, 2017
We present a novel extended-focus optical coherence microscope (OCM) attaining 0.7 {\mu}m axial and 0.4 {\mu}m lateral resolution maintained over a depth of 40 {\mu}m, while preserving the advantages of Fourier domain OCM.
