Modeling three‐dimensional crack propagation—A comparison of crack path tracking strategies

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2008
AbstractThe development of a new finite element technique for the simulation of discontinuous failure phenomena in three dimensions is the key objective of this study. In contrast to the widely used extended finite element technique, we apply a purely deformation‐based strategy based on an independent interpolation of the deformation field on both ...

Fatigue crack propagation of planar three-dimensional cracks

International Journal of Fatigue, 2022
In this paper the Fourier series is used to evaluate mode I Stress Intensity Factors (SIF) in three-dimensional planar flaws based on a distortion transformation of a reference disc. Under the hypothesis of an isolated crack, the SIF at each point of the crack border is calculated to assess the crack shape after propagation according to the crack ...

Three dimensional crack closure measurements

23rd Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 1985
This paper describes fatigue crack growth and retardation experiments conducted in polycarbonate test specimens. This transparent model material allowed optical interferometry measurements of through-the-thickness fatigue crack opening profiles. Crack surface displacements were then obtained through the specimen thickness and are discussed in terms of ...

Scattering from three-dimensional cracks

IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 1989
Scattering from three-dimensional cracks is analyzed and measured. The crack geometry is modeled as a rectangular groove in a perfectly conducting surface. The groove forming the crack may be terminated with an open aperture creating a slit in the conducting surface or with an impedance boundary creating a trough.

Three-dimensional crack closure behavior

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1990
A crack closure measurement technique involving fatigue striations was used to produce a three-dimensional crack opening load profile for 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. The crack opening load profile, determined through the specimen thickness, was compared with crack opening load measurements made with strain gages and displacement gages.

Simulation of three-dimensional cracks

The Visual Computer, 2000
We describe a method for simulating the process of cracking based on a 3D physical model. Cracks appear when the stress caused by internal or external force exceeds the tolerable amount. We applied a spring network model to a simulation of cracks that appear on drying clay. Clay contracts, or shrinks, as it dries.

Three-Dimensional Slightly Nonplanar Cracks

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1992
Abstract Three-dimensional slightly nonplanar cracks are studied via a perturbation method valid to the first-order accuracy in the deviation of the crack shape from a perfectly planar reference crack. The Bueckner-Rice crack-face weight functions are used in the perturbation analysis to establish a relationship, within first-order ...
