Particle-by-Particle Reconstruction of Ultrafiltration Cakes in 3D from Binarized TEM Images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging is one of the few techniques available for direct observation of the microstructure of ultrafiltration cakes.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry Method: Advances and Error Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
A full three-dimensional particle tracking system was developed and tested. By using three separate CCDs placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, the threedimensional location of particles can be determined.

Three-dimensional virtual refocusing of fluorescence microscopy images using deep learning

open access: yes, 2019
Three-dimensional (3D) fluorescence microscopy in general requires axial scanning to capture images of a sample at different planes. Here we demonstrate that a deep convolutional neural network can be trained to virtually refocus a 2D fluorescence image ...

Experimental and computational investigation of confined laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This paper presents an experimental and computational study on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for both unconfined flat surface and confined cavity cases. An integrated LIBS system is employed to acquire the shockwave and plasma plume images.

AAA+ protein unfoldases—the Moirai of the proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
AAA+ unfoldases are essential molecular motors that power protein degradation and disaggregation. This review integrates recent cryo‐electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) structures and single‐molecule biophysical data to reconcile competing models of substrate translocation.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

A novel three-dimensional object detection with the modified You Only Look Once method

open access: yesInternational Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems, 2018
Three-dimensional object detection aims to produce a three-dimensional bounding box of an object at its full extent. Nowadays, three-dimensional object detection is mainly based on red green blue-depth (RGB-D) images.

Refractive Index Matched Scanning and Detection of Soft Particle

open access: yes, 2017
We describe here how to apply the three dimensional imaging technique of refrecative index matched scanning to hydrogel spheres. Hydrogels are water based materials with a low refractive index, which allows for index matching with water-based solvent ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...
