Microengineered Gradient Hydrogels for Mechanobiology

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Gradient hydrogels are used to mimic the mechanical heterogeneity in native tissues, offering powerful in vitro platforms to study cell‐material interactions in diverse pathophysiological contexts. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the design and experimental considerations for stiffness gradient hydrogels, discussing exemplary achievements ...

Superficial vein thrombosis and deep vein thrombosis – a comparison

open access: yes, 2017
Although superficial vein thrombosis is commonly considered a rather minor condition, a number of studies indicate that its consequences can be much more severe.

Long‐Term Hydrophilic, Anti‐Clotting, and Anti‐Fibrotic Dynamic Covalent Silicone‐Based Biomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Dynamic covalent crosslinking of a Schiff‐base silicone elastomer with hydrazide‐functionalized polymers is demonstrated to improve the long‐term hydrophilicity as well as the anti‐fouling and anti‐clotting properties of PDMS implants. The hydrazone‐functionalized material prevents hydrophobic recovery, resists clotting, and significantly reduces ...

Effect of bone marrow blood versus peripheral blood on the hemostatic balance of osteoblasts and endothelial cells

open access: yesScientific Reports
Bone and bone-marrow (BM) have the same blood supply and thus may be considered as one organ. We previously demonstrated that the microcirculation hemostatic balance that includes heparanase, tissue factor (TF), TF pathway inhibitor (TFPI) and TFPI-2 are

Recent advances in the treatment of venous thromboembolism in the era of the direct oral anticoagulants [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2017
The direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have now supplanted vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The DOACs include dabigatran, which inhibits thrombin, and rivaroxaban, apixaban, and edoxaban, which inhibit ...

Engineered Heparinized GQDS/HPEI–Polyamide Membrane for Bilirubin Removal via One Step Anti Coagulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A multifunctional heparinized polyamide membrane embedded with graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI) is engineered for efficient bilirubin removal via a one‐step anticoagulation–adsorption process. The membrane demonstrates enhanced hemocompatibility, prolonged clotting times, and high bilirubin adsorption capacity ...

Importance of Inhibitor Surveillance During Emicizumab Prophylaxis in Young Children With Hemophilia: An Illustrative Case Series

open access: yesCase Reports in Hematology
Hemophilia is an X-linked inherited bleeding disorder associated with bleeding, which starts in infancy. The age of initiation of prophylaxis with clotting factor concentrate is limited by the intravenous mode of administration. Emicizumab, a Factor VIII

Material Selection and Geometric Design for Few‐filament Shape Memory Polymer Yarns for Force Generation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A custom shape memory polymer material selection process relates quantitative application criteria (e.g., compression garment yarns) to material characterization information. The selected materials are manufactured into yarn geometries, which expand the design space by creating structural stress‐strain profiles beyond the nominal material stress‐strain

A Pressure Microsensor Made of Parylene‐C for Use as Medical Implant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A monolithic parylene‐C pressure sensor with gold strain gauges provides 6.2 μV$\mu{\rm V}$·mmHg$\cdot{\rm mmHg}$−1$^{-1}$ sensitivity. The morphology of a sputtered thin film strain sensor is granular/columnar, which results in a high gauge factor of 7.5. Thermal bonding and parylene‐C coating create a hermetic cavity.
