From Low Thrust to Solar Sailing: A Homotopic Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This paper describes a novel method to solve solar-sail minimum-time-of-flight optimal control problems starting from a low-thrust solution. The method is based on a homotopic continuation. This technique allows to link the low-thrust with the solar-sail

Harmonizing the Pyrene and Ether Groups in Covalent Triazine Polymers for Highly Effective H2O2 Photosynthesis via One‐Step Two‐Electron Oxygen Reduction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The pyrene and ether groups are incorporated into the covalent triazine polymer (CTP) structure. The synergistic effect of the two functional groups endows CTP with better electron transfer, light absorption, and oxygen activation properties. An impressive apparent quantum yield (13.2% @420 nm) and a remarkable solar‐to‐chemical conversion efficiency ...

A thrust to trust minimum thrust

open access: yes
We determine the minimum value of thrust for a number of N-particle configurations. For N=5 in three dimensions an exact result is found for the first time. For larger N we obtain numerical results through optimisation. When a definite value cannot be reliably identified, the results are analysed in the context of Extreme Value Theory, using a Maximum ...

Thrust stand evaluation of engine performance improvement algorithms in an F-15 airplane [PDF]

open access: yes
An investigation is underway to determine the benefits of a new propulsion system optimization algorithm in an F-15 airplane. The performance seeking control (PSC) algorithm optimizes the quasi-steady-state performance of an F100 derivative turbofan ...

Low Thrust Augmented Spacecraft Formation-Flying [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Ballistic spacecraft formation-flying with zero thrust has great utility, but it is limited to a comparatively small set of relative trajectories.

Unprecedented Spin‐Lifetime of Itinerant Electrons in Natural Graphite Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graphite exhibits extraordinary spintronic potential, with electron spin lifetimes reaching 1,000 ns at room temperature ‐ over 100 times longer than graphene‐based devices. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals strong anisotropy: out‐of‐plane spins live 50 times longer than their in‐plane counterparts.

Grain Boundary Space Charge Engineering of Solid Oxide Electrolytes: Model Thin Film Study

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates unprecedented control of grain boundary electrical properties in solid electrolytes. Selective diffusion of cations through grain boundaries in thin films enables 12 orders of magnitude variation in ionic resistance, proving that systematic chemical modification of grain boundary electrical properties is feasible.

Design of an Axial-Type Magnetic Gear with Auxiliary Flux-Enhancing Structure

open access: yesEnergies
In this paper, a new axial-type magnetic gear with an auxiliary flux-enhancing structure (AFS-AMG) is proposed. Compared to conventional AMGs, it has a higher torque density and higher permanent magnet (PM) utilization factor.
