Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Workflow for Design of Experiments‐Based Modeling of Species Transport and Growth Kinetics in GaN Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel workflow for investigating hydride vapor phase epitaxy for GaN bulk crystal growth is proposed. It combines Design of experiments (DoE) with physical simulations of mass transport and crystal growth kinetics, serving as an intermediate step between DoE and experiments.

Review of a Swirl Double Base Injector Performance by It’s Hot-Fire Test on a Laboratory Liquid Micro Impulse Engine With Single Injector [PDF]

open access: yesفصلنامه علوم و فناوری فضایی, 2016
Because of vast applications of Liquid fuel engines in rockets and importance of their functional parameters such as trust, specific impulse and fuel consumption in engine performance, it is needed to be tested in different functional conditions before ...

In Situ Micromechanical Study of Bimodal γ′–γ″ Precipitate Assemblies in Ni–Cr–Al–Nb Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A Ni–Cr–Al–Nb superalloy with a bimodal γ′–γ″ precipitate distribution is developed. Composite precipitate assemblies form through heterogeneous nucleation, effectively impeding dislocation motion. Micropillar compression reveals high strength at room and elevated temperatures, governed by precipitate shearing, with coupled faulting mechanisms ...

Machine Learning‐Supported Analysis for Predicting and Visualizing Nonlinear Relationships Between Material Properties in Electroplated Chromium Layers

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study applies machine learning regression to predict chromium layer thickness in decorative trivalent chromium electroplating, using 441 experiments from laboratory‐scale (1L) and pilot‐scale (14L) setups. Tree‐based models, particularly CatBoost, outperformed linear regression by capturing nonlinear parameter interactions (R2$R^2$ up to 0.77 ...

Analyzing Engine Performance and Combustor Performance to Assess Sustainable Aviation Fuel Blends

open access: yesAerospace
FT blends derived from biomass have been confirmed to benefit reductions in GHG and particulate matter (PM). An improvement in combustibility is predicted to reduce fuel consumption and lead to further emission reduction. Various FT fuel blends (7%, 10%,

Tongue thrust in adults

open access: yesInternational Journal of Orofacial Myology, 1978
Tongue thrust, or reverse swallow, is evidenced by the incorrect placement of the tongue between the upper and lower teeth in swallowing or at rest. 1 Most dentists and speech pathologists associate the term "tongue thrust" with concomitant speech problems and malocclusions that may require orthodontic appliances.

Advanced Electron Microscopy and Microcomputed Tomography Analysis of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Base Superalloys After Short‐Term Multiaxial Creep

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work studies the anisotropic behavior of circular notched tensile specimens of Ni‐base superalloy single crystals during high‐temperature tensile creep along [001], [110], and [111]. Correlative scale‐bridging imaging of specimens reveals early rupture along [110] because 1) plastic deformation proceeds faster at notch center; 2) more (brittle ...
