Detection of infrasonic pulses from thunderclouds

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 1977
Acoustic data obtained from thunderstorm observations during 1975 near Socorro, New Mexico, and during 1976 at J. F. Kennedy Space Center, Florida, exhibited single, infrasonic pulses superimposed on the thunder signals arriving from the cloud in each of several thunder records. Only the Socorro data have been quantitatively analysed thus far.

On the impact of thunder on cloud ice crystals and droplets [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
Calculations are presented on the impact of thunder on cloud particles. The results show that the creation of a shock wave front near a lightning channel results in shattering of ice crystals, droplets, and dust aerosols, this being a yet unidentified ...

Estimation of sprite occurrences in Central Africa

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2002
Extremely low-frequency magnetic field disturbances from intense positive lightning discharges are compared to the convective cloud cover in central Africa, derived from infrared brightness temperatures recorded on board the geostationary satellite ...

The emission of energetic electrons from the complex streamer corona adjacent to leader stepping

open access: yes, 2019
We here propose a model to capture the complexity of the streamer corona adjacent to leader stepping and relate it to the production of energetic electrons serving as a source of X-rays and $\gamma$-rays, manifesting in terrestrial gamma-ray flashes ...

HF Lightning Observations in the Upper Volga Region of Russia

open access: yesAtmosphere
Much of the information for studying the processes of lightning discharge initiation and development is provided by studying thundercloud radio emissions in various frequency bands.

Initiation of non-tropical thunderstorms by solar activity [PDF]

open access: yes
Correlative evidence accumulating since 1926 suggests that there must be some physical coupling mechanism between solar activity and thunderstorm occurrence in middle to high latitudes.

Studying Recorded lightning over Iraq for Period 1998-2011

open access: yesAl-Mustansiriyah Journal of Science, 2018
This research studies distribution of thunderstorm in Iraq for the period (1998-2011), the result showed that  the largest regions which had been hit by lightning stroke were between latitude (35-36◦)E and longitude (45-46◦)N, and April was the most ...

Measuring Streamer Producing Thundercloud Electric Fields Using Radio Observations of Narrow Bipolar Events

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The strong very high frequency (VHF) radiation from compact intra‐cloud discharges (CIDs) is attributed to streamers. An analytical model, taking altitude and applied electric field as input, is developed for effective representation of current for a ...
