Runaway electrification of friable self-replicating granular matter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We establish that the nonlinear dynamics of collisions between particles favors the charging of a insulating, friable, self-replicating granular material that undergoes nucleation, growth, and fission processes; we demonstrate with a minimal dynamical ...

Oxygen Isotopes in Tree Rings Track Neotropical Climate Dynamics

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract Central America faces increasing risks from climate variability and extreme weather events. Limited observational records and model biases have constrained our ability to understand the ocean–atmosphere dynamics that influence precipitation variability in the region over longer timescales.

Capturing Extreme Water Vapor and Instability With High‐Resolution GNSS Monitoring

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 27, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study used data from a high‐resolution Global Navigation Satellite System network (< 10 km spacing), including private stations, to analyze water vapor structure during a heavy rainfall event in Japan. The network captured localized extreme precipitable water vapor (> 70 mm) and a moist absolutely unstable layer near the humid core.

Recovery curves of the surface electric field after lightning discharges occurring between the positive charge pocket and negative charge centre in a thundercloud [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Surface observations of the electric field recovery curves of the lightning discharges occurring between the positive charge pocket and negative main charge centre in an overhead thundercloud are reported.

Angular distribution of Bremsstrahlung photons and of positrons for calculations of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes and positron beams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Within thunderstorms electrons can gain energies of up to hundred(s) of MeV. These electrons can create X-rays and gamma-rays as Bremsstrahlung when they collide with air molecules.

Mapping Lightning Flash Density and Fatality Risk in Uttar Pradesh Using Satellite‐Based LIS Data and Geospatial Technology

open access: yesCLEAN – Soil, Air, Water, Volume 54, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study integrates satellite‐based LIS lightning data with geospatial analysis to map lightning flash density and assess fatality risk across Uttar Pradesh (2000‒2022). Results reveal marked spatial and seasonal variability, with peak activity during the monsoon and elevated fatalities among rural male populations.

Simulation on the development progress of positive glow corona discharge from ground wire of AC/DC transmission lines under thunderstorm condition

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2019
In thunderstorm weather, lightning induction appears on the surface of ground objects, and then the positive glow corona is initiated, which influences the selection of lighting targets by lighting leader.

Incorporating W‐Band Doppler Velocity Signal Simulator Into COSP2: Model Evaluation Against Ground‐Based Radar Measurement

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract A new signal simulator for Doppler velocity, derived for W‐band cloud profiling radar onboard EarthCARE, is developed and implemented into the Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project Observation Simulator Package version 2 (COSP2). The simulator converts the vertical motion of hydrometeors and cumulus mass flux in global climate models ...

Space-temporal structure of the thunderstorm ground enhancements (TGEs)

open access: yesPhysics Open
We analyzed the structure of the Thunderstorm Ground Enhancement (TGE) using a particle detector network on Aragats. We performed a statistical analysis of the particle arrival time series on a nanosecond time scale using the largest TGE event on record,
