Creation of regions for dialect features using a cellular automaton [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
An issue in dialect research has been how to make generalizations from survey data about where some dialect feature might be found. Pre-computational methods included drawing isoglosses or using shadings to indicate areas where an analyst expected a ...

Prestroke radiation from thunderclouds [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 1966
Thunderstorm weather and individual cells were observed and their RF radiations recorded for frequencies with approximately decade spacings from 10 khz to 1000 Mhz. Antennas were nondirectional, but positive results were obtained for the three cases in the summer of 1964 when only single cells were detectable in the vicinity of the observation station.

Relativistic electron beams above thunderclouds [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2011
Abstract. Non-luminous relativistic electron beams above thunderclouds have been detected by the radio signals of low frequency ∼40–400 kHz which they radiate. The electron beams occur ∼2–9 ms after positive cloud-to-ground lightning discharges at heights between ∼22–72 km above thunderclouds.

On the timing between terrestrial gamma ray flashes, radio atmospherics, and optical lightning emission [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
On 25 October 2012 the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscope Imager (RHESSI) and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellites passed over a thunderstorm on the coast of Sri Lanka.

Height of Thunderclouds [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1872
A FEW days ago I had an opportunity of estimating the height of a bank of thunderclouds, an account of which may interest the readers of NATURE.

Parameterizations for global thundercloud corona discharge distributions [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
Four parameterizations, distinguishing between land and ocean, have been developed to simulate global distributions of thundercloud streamer corona discharges (also known as Blue LUminous Events or BLUEs) mainly producing bluish optical emissions ...

The polarity of thunderclouds [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Containing Papers of a Mathematical and Physical Character, 1932
The mechanism of the maintenance of the negative charge upon the surface of the earth has long been sought. C. T. R. Wilson has made the suggestion that the activity of thunderstorms of positive polarity—positively charged above and negatively charged below—will serve to separate positive and negative charges, by carrying negative charges to the earth ...

Numerical Analysis of Thundercloud Charge Structures Difference of Two Thunderstorms in Qinghai and the Beijing Area

open access: yesGaoyuan qixiang, 2022
Two thunderstorm cases occurred at Datong of Qinghai in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and western mountain of Beijing area in the North China Plain were simulated using electrification and discharge schemes with WRF3.7.1_ELEC ...

Experimental Evidence of Giant Electron - Gamma Bursts Generated by Extensive Atmospheric Showers in Thunderclouds

open access: yes, 2004
The existence of a new phenomena - giant electron-gamma bursts is established. The bursts are generated in thunderclouds as a result of the combined action of runaway breakdown and extensive atmosphere showers (RB-EAS).
