Evaluating meteorological reanalysis for identifying fair‐weather conditions in historical atmospheric electricity data

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Atmospheric electricity data require local weather information for identifying representative ‘fair weather’ values, which are needed for climate‐related studies. ERA5 meteorological reanalysis data are evaluated for this, by comparison with data from Lerwick observatory, Shetland, where a long series of twentieth‐century potential gradient ...

Isotope production in thunderstorms [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2020
Thunderstorms and lightnings are natural particle accelerator systems. Terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, caused by relativistic runaway electron avalanches, produce bursts of $X$ and $ $ rays, energetic enough to produce photo-nuclear reactions within the atmosphere.

A scalable transfer learning workflow for extracting biological and behavioural insights from forest elephant vocalizations

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Animal vocalizations encode rich biological information, making bioacoustic analysis a valuable non‐invasive tool for assessing animal welfare and population dynamics. However, traditional methods relying on manual feature selection are labour‐intensive, subjective and lack scalability for the large datasets generated by passive acoustic monitoring ...

The Quality of Interactions in the Home Science Environment and Associations With Children's Science Learning

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT From early on, families play a critical role in fostering their children's science development, particularly through shared interactions in the home science environment (HSE). The quality of these interactions is deemed pivotal for children's science learning.

Cb-LIKE – Cumulonimbus Likelihood: Thunderstorm forecasting with fuzzy logic

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2017
Aviation is heavily affected by thunderstorms. Approaching storm cells with accompanying effects such as heavy rain, hail or downdrafts cause delays and flight cancellations.

A study of the 23 October 2022 southern England damaging MCS

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
During the afternoon of 23 October 2022, a mesoscale convective system (MCS) developed and intensified over the English Channel and tracked north‐northeastward into southern England, producing widespread damaging winds and at least three moderate to strong tornadoes in Hampshire.

An observational study of a circular gust front over the Yangtze Delta, China

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
Concentric gust fronts are formed when a thunderstorm's downdraft reaches the ground and the outflow from the cold pool spreads uniformly outwards into the surrounding warm and humid air mass. Observational evidence presented here show the case of narrow‐band echoes forming a ring around a thunderstorm.
