Numerical and Physical Simulation of a Thunderstorm Downburst
Proceedings of the Eighth Asia-Pacific Conference on Wind Engineering, 2013This paper describes work undertaken as a joint project between the University of Strathclyde (UoS) and the University of Birmingham (UoB) in the UK, aimed at simulating thunderstorm downbursts both physically and numerically. The UoB downburst simulator uses a 1m diameter, impinging jet with computercontrolled fans and flaps to physically simulate a ...

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 2021
Abstract Fluctuating winds from intense thunderstorm/downburst are often modelled as the amplitude modulated evolutionary stochastic processes and simulated based on the spectral representation method. Aspects of the modelling and simulation include assessing time and frequency dependent power spectrum, and the identification of the amplitude and ...

CFD Simulation of Curved-Roof Subjected to Thunderstorm Downburst
Key Engineering Materials, 2011Thunderstorm downburst is a sort of outburst strong wind on or near the ground, and its wind field characteristics are significantly different from boundary layer winds. The study on its effect on the structures was relatively rare, nevertheless numerous structural failures around the world caused by thunderstorm were found.

Simulation of Thunderstorm Downbursts and Associated Wind Turbine Loads
Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, 2013This study is focused on simulation of thunderstorm downbursts and associated wind turbine loads. We first present a thunderstorm downburst model, in which the wind field is assumed to result from the summation of an analytical mean field and stochastic turbulence.

A Computational Model to Simulate Thunderstorm Downbursts for Wind Turbine Loads Analysis
Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, 2022Abstract The generation of wind fields is of interest in the study of the structural performance of wind turbines in critical events, such as thunderstorm downbursts. Various methods ranging from the use of empirical data to employing computational simulations are typically adopted to study the response of wind turbines in downburst flow

Wind pressure on a solar updraft tower in a simulated stationary thunderstorm downburst
Wind and Structures, an International Journal, 2012Thunderstorm downbursts are responsible for numerous structural failures around the world. The wind characteristics in thunderstorm downbursts containing vortex rings differ with those in 'traditional' boundary layer winds (BLW). This paper initially performs an unsteady-state simulation of the flow structure in a downburst (modelled as a impinging jet

Aerodynamic characteristics of the train under the stationary thunderstorm downburst wind
Physics of FluidsThe aerodynamic characteristics of the train under the stationary thunderstorm downburst wind were studied. The thunderstorm downburst wind test device was employed to simulate the thunderstorm downburst wind field. Based on the rigid model pressure measurement tests, analyses were conducted on the influence of radial distance on the pressure ...

Simulation of Inflow Velocity Fields and Wind Turbine Loads during Thunderstorm Downbursts
51st AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference
18th AIAA/ASME/AHS Adaptive Structures Conference
12th, 2010The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard 61400-1 for the design of wind turbines does not explicitly address site-specific conditions associated with anomalous atmospheric events or conditions. Examples of off-standard atmospheric conditions include thunderstorm downbursts, hurricanes, tornadoes, low-level jets, etc.

Numerical study on a severe downburst-producing thunderstorm on 23 August 2001 in Beijing
Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, 2007A thunderstorm that produced severe wind, heavy rain and hail on 23 August 2001 in Beijing was studied by a three-dimensional cloud model including hail-bin microphysics. This model can provide important information for hail size at the surface, which is not available in hail parameterization cloud models.
