Thunderstorm downbursts are major cause of concern for engineering structures both on ground as well as those in air, namely aircrafts. The wind velocity profile of a thunderstorm downburst-induced wind is significantly different compared to natural atmospheric boundary layer winds.

50th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2012
This study is focused on the simulation of thunderstorm downburst wind fields defined separately from non-turbulent and turbulent parts and of associated loads on a 5-MW wind turbine. The non-turbulent part is simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools as well as an alternative semi-empirical model; the turbulent part is simulated as ...

A risk model for design of transmission line systems against thunderstorm downburst winds
Engineering Structures, 2000Abstract In this paper we describe a probabilistic model for the design of transmission line systems for local high-intensity winds of the downburst type, usually associated with thunderstorms. The downburst damage ‘footprint’ has been assumed to be roughly rectangular in shape, and the transmission line as a line ‘target’.

The safety of the high-speed train traveling through the stationary thunderstorm downburst wind was studied. First, a thunderstorm wind test device was used to simulate the stationary thunderstorm downburst wind. Based on the rigid model pressure measurement tests, the aerodynamic forces of the train traveling along different paths through the ...
