Predicting small-scale, short-lived downbursts : case study with the NWP limited-area ALARO model for the Pukkelpop thunderstorm [PDF]
The authors consider a thunderstorm event in 2011 during a music festival in Belgium that produced a short-lived downburst of a diameter of less than 100 m.

Numerical and analytical simulation of downburst wind loads [PDF]
Researchers and designers currently have a number of methods for numerically simulating either the non-turbulent or turbulent characteristics of downbursts.

The physical simulation of thunderstorm downbursts using an impinging jet [PDF]
This paper outlines the results of a physical simulation (at a 1:700 - 1:1000 geometric scale) of a thunderstorm downburst. Three different methods are examined in order to generate the time dependent nature of a downburst: directly controlling the fans and via two different types of opening apertures.

CLIMATHUNDERR: experimental database of buoyancy-driven downbursts [PDF]
Thunderstorm downbursts are windstorms due to intense negatively-buoyant flows produced beneath cumulonimbus clouds. Their study has recently attracted significant scientific and media attention due to the current and projected impacts of climate change.

Toward the Codification of Thunderstorm/Downburst Winds
Abstract Non-synoptic winds often exhibit rapid changes during a short period, which may be accompanied by changes in direction. This introduces non-stationarity both in the mean and the standard deviation of wind fluctuations. Thus, design loads in non-synoptic non-stationary winds obtained from conventional analysis frameworks included

Characterization of thunderstorm downburst winds through CFD techniques
The characteristic wind field of a certain region is mostly governed by the climatology of its larger scale area. In the case of mid-latitude regions (e.g. Europe), their climatology is determined by the extra-tropical cyclones at the larger synoptic scale.

Thunderstorms over a tropical Indian station, Minicoy: Role of vertical wind shear [PDF]
In this study, an attempt has been made to bring out the observational aspects of vertical wind shear in thunderstorms over Minicoy. Case studies of thunderstorm events have been examined to find out the effect of vertical wind shear and instability on ...

Generation of downburst outflow in a traditional wind tunnel using multi-blade flow control device
The thunderstorm downbursts impose a great threat to civil engineering structures and the experimentation for such nonsynoptic winds plays a significant role in the characterization and quantification of relevant aerodynamic loading.

While multiple types of remote sensing instruments have been used to investigate wind profiles associated with thunderstorms, the use of profiling Lidars (LIght Detection And Ranging) has been mostly limited to the wind energy sector.
