Trends in thunderstorm days, lightning activity, squalls and the environmental factors in Hong Kong

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
This study analyses trends in Hong Kong's convective weather using long‐term observer‐based and shorter‐term instrument‐based data. Annual thunderstorm days increased significantly by 1.9 days decade−1 in 1947–2024, notably in June–September, consistent with increasingly favourable warm‐season environments for thunderstorms.

Spatiotemporal mapping the usable space of free‐roaming equids across the western United States

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
Identification of the inter‐decadal (2010‐2011) enhancement‐degradation gradients in the usable space for wild equid Herd Management Areas in the Great Basin, USA. Abstract Management of feral equids in the American West is hindered by the lack of a formal habitat map and monitoring system.

First reported detection of a winter continental gamma-ray glow in Europe [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics
This study presents the first-ever published detection of two parallel winter continental gamma-ray glows in Central Europe, observed during a rare winter thunderstorm on Milešovka hill, Czech Republic.

Formation of Saturn's ring spokes by lightning-induced electron beams

open access: yes, 2006
Spokes are near-linear markings sometimes visible on Saturn's rings. They are widely accepted as being electrostatically-levitated sheets of similar to 0.6 micron-radius charged grains.

Study of Positive Corona Discharge of Needle Plate Electrodes in Airflow

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT For high‐speed moving objects such as aircraft and wind turbine blades, discharge occurs under strong airflow. Research on lightning attachment characteristics has been extensive, whereas the role of corona discharge in pre‐breakdown streamer development has received less attention.

Improved thunderstorm weather information for pilots through ground and satellite based observing systems

open access: yes, 2010
Today’s weather information for pilots on thunderstorm conditions on their flight path is insufficient. Weather charts provided by the World Area Forecasting Centres and taken onboard by pilots before take-off are based on forecasts of large scale ...

Rare Lightning and Convection Characteristics During Two Successive Tornadoes in Southern China

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Systematic investigations into lightning characteristics of tornado storms in China remain scarce. This study comprehensively analyses rare lightning behaviour and overshooting top characteristics for two successive tornadoes during a long‐lived supercell in southern China on 27 April 2024.

Thunderstorm Ground Enhancements (TGEs) – New High-Energy Phenomenon Originated in the Terrestrial Atmosphere

open access: yes, 2013
Strong electric fields inside thunderclouds give rise to enhanced fluxes of high- energy electrons and, consequently, gamma rays and neutrons. During thunderstorms at Mount Aragats, hundreds of Thunderstorm Ground Enhancements (TGEs) comprising millions ...

High-energy radiation from thunderstorms and lightning with LOFT

open access: yes, 2015
This is a White Paper in support of the mission concept of the Large Observatory for X-ray Timing (LOFT), proposed as a medium-sized ESA mission. We discuss the potential of LOFT for the study of high-energy radiation from thunderstorms and lightning. For a summary, we refer to the paper.
