Skeletal ontogeny of the Plainfin Midshipman, Porichthys notatus (Percomorphacea: Batrachoidiformes)

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 242, Issue 3, Page 447-494, March 2023., 2023
Description of skeletal ontogeny during early life history of Porichthys notatus. Establishment that the previously described as dorsalmost pectoral radial is homologous to the propterygium. Unique developmental pathway of the posterior basibranchial cartilage, first appearing as paired elements which fuse in later stages.

Mobilising international resource management certification schemes: Re‐configuration of the global shark fin supply network by producers

open access: yesGeo: Geography and Environment, Volume 10, Issue 1, January‐June 2023., 2023
Short Abstract The case of Japanese shark fisheries based in Kesennuma, Miyagi shows the full picture of the current global context behind a highly controversial commodity: shark fins. Drawing on this case, this paper analyses the network of cooperative stakeholders to re‐configure a global sustainable commodity network for shark fins.

Aquaculture and agriculture‐by products as sustainable sources of omega‐3 fatty acids in the food industry

open access: yeseFood, Volume 2, Issue 5, Page 209-233, October 2021., 2021
The valorization of by‐products is currently a matter of great concern to improve the sustainability of the food industry. High quality by‐products derived from the food chain are omega‐3 fatty acids, being fish the main source of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid.

Ecological vulnerability of the chondrichthyan fauna of southern Australia to the stressors of climate change, fishing and other anthropogenic hazards

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 22, Issue 5, Page 1105-1135, September 2021., 2021
Abstract We develop a potentially widely applicable framework for analysing the vulnerability, resilience risk and exposure of chondrichthyan species to all types of anthropogenic stressors in the marine environment. The approach combines the three components of widely applied vulnerability analysis (exposure, sensitivity and adaptability) (ESA) with ...

Atresia of ovarian follicles in fishes, and implications and uses in aquaculture and fisheries

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, Volume 44, Issue 9, Page 1271-1291, September 2021., 2021
Abstract Atresia of ovarian follicles, that is the degenerative process of germ cells and their associated somatic cells, is a complex process involving apoptosis, autophagy and heterophagy. Follicular atresia is a normal component of fish oogenesis and it is observed throughout the ovarian cycle, although it is more frequent in regressing ovaries ...

Stable Isotopic Niche Variability and Overlap across Four Fish Guilds in the North‐Central Gulf of Mexico

open access: yesMarine and Coastal Fisheries, Volume 13, Issue 3, Page 213-227, June 2021., 2021
Abstract The quantification of niche diversity and niche overlap is useful for understanding the impacts of fisheries regulation and management. In this work, we evaluate isotopic niche size and overlap at the guild and species levels. Specifically, we analyzed guild‐ and species‐specific isotopic niche space and niche space overlap using the SIBER and

Aggregative capacity of experimental anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (aFADs) in Northeastern Brazil revealed through electronic tagging data

open access: yesOcean and Coastal Research, 2020
Catches of pelagic fish associated to anchored Fish Aggregating Devices have been responsible for increases in income, fish consumption, and even cultural identity of artisanal fishing communities in many developing countries worldwide.

The European Union's fishing activity outside of European waters and the Sustainable Development Goals

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 22, Issue 3, Page 532-545, May 2021., 2021
Abstract The EU's fishing fleet engages in extensive fishing activities in the Exclusive Economic Zones of non‐EU countries as well as in areas beyond national jurisdiction. These activities are regulated by an external dimension in the EU's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 3, Issue 1, Page 22-42, January 2021., 2021
Map of the 84 sampling sites. Detailed map of the 84 sampling sites in Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL). Red circles represent stations where trawling and eDNA sampling were done simultaneously only at bottom (n = 54).
