Effects of various logistics packaging on the quality and microbial variation of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). [PDF]

open access: yesFront Nutr, 2022
Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) is an economically valuable ocean fish species. It is susceptible to contamination during storage and transportation. Having proper transportation packaging and stable temperature during transportation are critical to prevent quality deterioration.

Histamine in Brazilian Foods: A Comprehensive Review of Occurrence and Risk Assessment for Intoxication and Intolerance

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 11, November 2025.
Even though histamine plays an important role in human health, it has been associated with food intoxication and intolerance episodes. The most relevant, current state of knowledge regarding histamine's biochemical and health aspects is provided. Histamine levels are provided for 17 food groups, including 335 food types and 11,437 samples, allowing ...

Enhanced thermoregulation abilities of shortfin mako sharks as the key adaptive significance of regional endothermy in fishes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 11, Page 2178-2189, November 2025.
We show that regionally endothermic shortfin mako sharks have enhanced thermoregulatory ability with an order higher warming rate than cooling rate during repeated dives, likely optimizing foraging efficiency. This ability, only comparable to bigeye tuna and swordfish in teleosts, represents the key adaptive significance of regional endothermy in ...

Into the Deep: Origins and Evolution of Northeastern Pacific Ocean Tuna (Thunnus spp.) Fisheries

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 26, Issue 6, Page 1164-1179, November 2025.
ABSTRACT People have had a profound influence on Earth's biodiversity for millennia, culminating in Anthropocene environmental degradation and the modern biodiversity crisis. While the scale and extent of people's long‐term influence on Earth's biodiversity in terrestrial and nearshore marine ecosystems are relatively well studied, there are ...

New Fishing Strategies to Face Climate Change Effects on the Spanish Tropical Tuna Fisheries Off Indian Ocean

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 34, Issue 6, Page 17-26, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Tropical tunas, including yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), are recognized as a crucial contributor to global food security. Moreover, yellowfin tuna is the most commercially valuable tropical tuna. The Spanish purse seine freezer fleet, actively operating in the Indian Ocean, emerges as a leading contributor to the global yellowfin tuna catch ...

Vessel Day Scheme and Tuna Catch in the Pacific Island Region

open access: yesAsia &the Pacific Policy Studies, Volume 12, Issue 3, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Tuna fishing is a major source of government revenue and economic growth in the Pacific Island countries. In 2007, a group of these countries introduced the Vessel Day Scheme (VDS), marking a shift from older access agreements to a more structured effort‐based management system.

Environmental and human factors shape the trophic ecology of a widespread marine predator

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 9, Page 1784-1799, September 2025.
Our study reveals how environmental factors and fishing pressure influence swordfish diet, highlighting trophic shifts under future climate scenarios. We provide a novel framework to strengthen our ability to plan for and manage the redistribution of species under global change ensuring that the energetic needs of predators are met.

Study on the catch, bycatch and discard of Chinese pelagic longline fisheries in the Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesAquaculture and Fisheries
Catch, bycatch and discard information is important for the assessment and management of fisheries. Using Chinese pelagic tuna longline observer data from 2010 to 2018, we studied the catch composition in the Chinese pelagic tuna longline fisheries in ...
