Brief communication: Thwaites Glacier cavity evolution [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2021
Between 2014 and 2017, ocean melt eroded a large cavity beneath and along the western margin of the fast-flowing core of Thwaites Glacier. Here we show that from 2017 to the end of 2020 the cavity persisted but did not expand.

Intermittent structural weakening and acceleration of the Thwaites Glacier Tongue between 2000 and 2018 [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2020
Evolving conditions at the terminus of Thwaites Glacier will be important in determining the rate of its future sea-level contribution over the coming decades.

Mass Loss From Thwaites Glacier Continues Even Without Ocean Melting

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers dominate Antarctica's sea‐level contribution. However, it remains unclear whether their ice loss is driven by anomalously warm present‐day ocean conditions, perhaps linked to anthropogenic climate change, or are an ...

Brief communication: Heterogenous thinning and subglacial lake activity on Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2020
A system of subglacial lakes drained on Thwaites Glacier from 2012–2014. To improve coverage for subsequent drainage events, we extended the elevation and ice-velocity time series on Thwaites Glacier through austral winter 2019.

Large-Scale Atmospheric Drivers of Snowfall over Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
High snowfall events on Thwaites Glacier (West Antarctica) are a key influencer of its ice mass change. In this study, we diagnose the mechanisms for orographic precipitation on Thwaites Glacier by analyzing the atmospheric conditions that lead to high ...

Sedimentary Signatures of Persistent Subglacial Meltwater Drainage From Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Subglacial meltwater drainage can enhance localized melting along grounding zones and beneath the ice shelves of marine-terminating glaciers. Efforts to constrain the evolution of subglacial hydrology and the resulting influence on ice stability in space

Persistent, extensive channelized drainage modeled beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2022
Subglacial hydrology is a leading control on basal friction and the dynamics of glaciers and ice sheets. At low discharge, subglacial water flows through high-pressure, sheet-like systems that lead to low effective pressures.

Energetics of surface melt in West Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2021
We use reanalysis data and satellite remote sensing of cloud properties to examine how meteorological conditions alter the surface energy balance to cause surface melt that is detectable in satellite passive microwave imagery over West Antarctica.
