Changes in West Antarctic ice stream dynamics observed with ALOS PALSAR data

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2008
The Advanced Land Observation System (ALOS) Phased‐Array Synthetic‐Aperture Radar (PALSAR) is an L‐band frequency (1.27 GHz) radar capable of continental‐scale interferometric observations of ice sheet motion.

The effect of the present-day imbalance on schematic and climate forced simulations of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapse [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Recent observations reveal that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is rapidly thinning, particularly at its two largest outlet glaciers, Pine Island Glacier and Thwaites Glacier, while East Antarctica remains relatively stable. Ice sheet model projections over

Climate variability accelerates Thwaites Glacier collapse

open access: yes
Abstract Over the last two decades, the contribution of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to sea level rise has doubled, and a substantial fraction of this mass loss has been linked to climate variability. Here, we analyse the future behaviour of Thwaites glacier under a noisy climate and show that climate variability alone is sufficient to ...

Bed-type variability and till (dis)continuity beneath Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2019
Recent seismic measurements from upper Thwaites Glacier indicate that the bed-type variability is closely related to the along-flow basal topography. In high-relief subglacial highlands, stoss sides of topographic highs have a relatively higher acoustic ...

Sustained retreat of the Pine Island Glacier [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We use satellite observations to show that, between 1992 and 2011, the Pine Island Glacier hinge line retreated at a rate of 0.95 ± 0.09 km yr−1 despite a progressive steepening and shoaling of the glacier surface and bedrock slopes, respectively, which ...

Vibroseismic measurements on Thwaites Glacier, Antarctica from 2022/23 and 2023/24

open access: yes
Vibroseismic surveys were conducted on Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica in two consecutive seasons 2022/23 and 2023/24, as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration's project GHOST (Geophysical Habitat of Subglacial Thwaites).

Modelling the evolution of Thwaites Glacier over the 20th century

open access: yes
Abstract. Thwaites Glacier is rapidly evolving and could make large sea-level contributions in the coming centuries, making it essential to understand the drivers of the ongoing ice loss. Sediment-core analysis suggests that Thwaites Glacier was in a relatively steady state for millennia before its western pinning point ungrounded in the 1940s.
