Nongenomic Actions of Thyroid Hormones: From Basic Research to Clinical Applications. An Update

, 2013
Extranuclear or nongenomic actions of thyroid hormones are unaffected by the inhibitors of protein synthesis, their site of action has been localized at the plasma membrane but also in the cytoplasm and organelles such as the mitochondria.

Thyroid Hormone Resistance

Annual Review of Medicine, 1992
Generalized resistance to thyroid hormone (GRTH) encompasses a heterogeneous group of conditions characterized by reduced responses of target tissues to thyroid hormone due to defects at the site of hormone action. In the majority of patients, GRTH is inherited as a dominant trait associated with mutations in the hormone-binding domain of the thyroid ...

Metabolism of the Thyroid Hormones

Hormone Research, 1987
This review covers the current knowledge about the various metabolic pathways involved in the conversion of thyroid hormones to the thyromimetically active and inactive iodothyronines. The concerted mechanism of systemic and local production of iodothyronines by tissue-specific iodothyronine deiodinase isozymes will ultimately determine the expression ...

Thyroid Hormones and Derivatives: Endogenous Thyroid Hormones and Their Targets

2018
More than a century after the discovery of L-Thyroxine, the main thyroid hormone secreted solely by the thyroid gland, several metabolites of this iodinated, tyrosine-derived ancestral hormone have been identified. These are utilized as hormones during development, differentiation, metamorphosis, and regulation of most biochemical reactions in ...

Thyroid Hormone and the Gut

Endocrine Research, 1988
The gastrointestinal tract interacts actively with the thyroid hormones, T4 and T3. Both T4 and T3 are absorbed well but incompletely from the gut, and many factors affect this absorption. The mechanism of absorption is unknown. It is decreased in most malabsorption conditions, but is increased in the postgastrojejunotomy syndrome.
