The Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Receptor: Impact of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone and Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Receptor Antibodies on Multimerization, Cleavage, and Signaling

Endocrinology and Metabolism Clinics of North America, 2009
The thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) has a central role in thyrocyte function and is also one of the major autoantigens for the autoimmune thyroid diseases. We review the post-translational processing, multimerization, and intramolecular cleavage of TSHR, all of which may modulate its signal transduction.

THE EFFECT OF THYROID-STIMULATING HORMONE IN ACUTE THYROIDITIS*†

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1951
ACUTE thyroiditis, also referred to as acute diffuse thyroiditis, acute nonsuppurative thyroiditis, and subacute thyroiditis, is an inflammatory disease characterized by fever, malaise, and a firm and very tender enlargement of the thyroid gland. The etiology is unknown. Recent studies (1, 2, 3) have disclosed that acute thyroiditis is accompanied by a

THYROIDITIS FOLLOWING ADMINISTRATION OF THYROID-STIMULATING HORMONE*

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1960
ABSTRACT The administration of 10 units of one lot of commercial thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) on two successive mornings to 21 healthy male adults produced acute thyroiditis in 10 of them. The thyroiditis was not accompanied or followed by the appearance of antibody reacting with the TSH used or with an extract of normal human thyroid, as measured

The Stimulation of Thyroid Hormone Secretion in Vitro by Thyroid-Stimulating Antibodies*

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1981
A new simple technique is described for the in vitro assay of thyroid-stimulating antibody (TSAb) in serum. Thyroid slices are incubated with serum in two-compartmental dialysis pot, followed by measurement of the thyroid hormone concentration in the dialysis fluid by RIA.

Effect of perinatal asphyxia on thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroid hormone levels

Acta Paediatrica, 2003
Aim: To compare serum concentrations of thyroid hormones—T4, T3, free T4 (FT4) and reverse T3 (rT3)—and thyroid‐stimulating hormone (TSH) found in the umbilical cord blood of term newborns with and without asphyxia and those found in their arterial blood collected between 18 and 24 h after birth.

Effect of Increased Circulating Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone onin VitroThyroid-Stimulating Hormone Stimulation of Thyroid and Adipose Tissues*

Endocrinology, 1980
Hormones have been shown to regulate the number and/or binding properties of their own receptors. The present studies examined the effect of chronic increased endogenous TSH levels, induced by tapazole or thyroidectomy, on in vitro TSH responsiveness and binding in thyroid and adipose tissues.

A water-soluble fragment of the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor which binds both thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibodies

Journal of Endocrinology, 1984
ABSTRACT Previous studies have shown that freezing and thawing of human thyroid homogenates releases a water-soluble substance which reversibly binds to TSH-receptor antibodies. This substance has been designated long-acting thyroid stimulator absorbing activity (LAA).

An immunoglobulin G complexed form of thyroid-stimulating hormone (macro thyroid-stimulating hormone) is a cause of elevated serum thyroid-stimulating hormone concentration

Annals of Clinical Biochemistry: International Journal of Laboratory Medicine, 2013
Background Macrocomplexes can be the cause of elevated serum hormone concentrations and may cause diagnostic confusion. This is well recognized for prolactin and commonly screened for using polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation.

Inappropriate Secretion of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone

Annals of Internal Medicine, 1981
Recent studies have provided major new insights into the syndromes of inappropriate secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), a heterogeneous group of disorders in which patients show inappropriately elevated levels of serum immunoactive TSH in the presence of elevated free thyroid hormone levels.

Artifactual elevation of thyroid-stimulating hormone

The American Journal of Medicine, 1991
A clinically euthyroid patient was found to have a normal serum thyroxine level and an elevated plasma thyrotropin (TSH) level measured by fluoroimmunoassay. Thyroid hormone therapy failed to suppress the TSH level. The TSH level was unresponsive to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) administration, alpha-subunits of pituitary glycoproteins were ...
