The catalytic role of iodine excess in loss of homeostasis in autoimmune thyroiditis
Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Obesity, 2018Purpose of review To review the latest developments concerning the role of iodine in the pathophysiology of autoimmune thyroiditis. Recent findings Recent studies have provided evidence that in areas with excess iodine intake, increased incidence of ...

This review of human autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) focuses mainly on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of this very common disorder, although some specific clinical situations are discussed. One peculiarity of AITD is the existence of two contrasting phenotypes: hypothyroid thyroiditis and hyperthyroid Graves' disease.

Thyroid Autoimmunity and Environment
Hormone and Metabolic Research, 2009Autoimmune thyroid disorders (AITDs) are the result of a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors, the former account for about 70-80% of liability to develop AITDs. However, at least 20-30% is contributed by environmental factors, which include certainly smoking (at least for Graves' disease and orbitopathy), probably stress, iodine

BACKGROUND High mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), a non-histone protein, plays an important role in autoimmune diseases. However, the significance of HMGB1 in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis has not been reported.

Thyroid autoimmunity and aging
Experimental Gerontology, 1998Aging is associated with the appearance of several serum autoantibodies, including thyroid autoantibodies. The biological and clinical significance of this phenomenon is still unknown, because, with the exception of primary myxedema, the prevalence of clinically overt thyroid autoimmune diseases is not increased in the elderly.

Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 2012
Autoimmune thyroid disorders (AITDs) are the most common organ-specific autoimmune disorders. The genetics as well as clinical and laboratory manifestations of AITDs are reviewed. We discuss the association between specific rheumatologic disorders and AITDs and manifestations of AITDs that mimic rheumatologic disorders.

Chronic Autoimmune Thyroiditis
New England Journal of Medicine, 1996In 1912, Hashimoto described four women in whom the thyroid gland was enlarged and appeared to have been transformed into lymphoid tissue (“struma lymphomatosa”).1 Although the patients were not initially hypothyroid, they became so after thyroid surgery.

The concept of thyroid autoimmune disease now includes the following clinical entities: 1 degree thyrotoxicosis and goitrous thyroiditis (Hashimoto) with their variants, and 1 degree myxedema (atrophic thyroiditis); some cases of sporadic nontoxic goiters; most cases of neonatal hyperthyroidism; and a proportion of congenital athyreotic cretinism ...

Autoimmunity in Thyroid Disease
New England Journal of Medicine, 1959AUTOIMMUNE processes have been implicated in a variety of systemic disorders, including some primary hemolytic anemias, idiopathic thrombocytopenia, drug-induced neutropenias and collagenvascular diseases. The immunologic basis for such disorders has not been directly substantiated, and some investigators resist the concept that the body can develop ...
