Vegetation on the move: elevational shifts and greening dynamics across the Himalayan alpine zone

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
This study investigates alpine ‘vegetation line' (the upper limit of continuous plant community) dynamics in the Himalayan alpine zone (HAZ) over a 24‐year timescale (1999–2022) using maximum NDVI products derived from Landsat series datasets, adjusted for sampling bias using phenological modelling.

Comparison of Machine Learning Models in Simulating Glacier Mass Balance: Insights from Maritime and Continental Glaciers in High Mountain Asia

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Accurately simulating glacier mass balance (GMB) data is crucial for assessing the impacts of climate change on glacier dynamics. Since physical models often face challenges in comprehensively accounting for factors influencing glacial melt and ...

The land surface water and energy budgets over the Tibetan Plateau [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Tibetan Plateau plays an important role in the Asian Monsoon and global general circulation system. Due to the lack of quantitative observations and complicated cold season processes in high elevation terrain, however, the land surface water and energy ...

The growth of northeastern Tibet and its relevance to large-scale continental geodynamics: A review of recent studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Recent studies of the northeastern part of the Tibetan Plateau have called attention to two emerging views of how the Tibetan Plateau has grown. First, deformation in northern Tibet began essentially at the time of collision with India, not 10–20 Myr ...

Over three‐quarters of earthworm species lack protection in China, a crisis exacerbated by climate change

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Earthworms, as ‘ecosystem engineers', play a crucial role in regulating ecosystem functions and shaping community structures. Due to climate change, earthworms face severe survival pressures and extinction risks. However, whether conservation efforts targeting aboveground biodiversity can cover the long‐neglected earthworm diversity remains unknown. To

Ultrasound and infections on the Tibetan Plateau [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Ultrasound, 2012
The authors report on an ultrasound (US) outreach program for the nomadic people living in Yushu, a remote area of Qinghai, Tibet, People's Republic of China (PRC) about 4800 m above sea level. The program was carried out in cooperation with ROKPA INTERNATIONAL, a non-profit organization (NGO) that aims at helping the poorest peoples living in remote ...

Tibetan Plateau Grassland Protection: Tibetan Herders\u27 Ecological Conception Versus State Policies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The establishment of the “Three Rivers’ Sources Nature Reserve” in 2002 - one of China’s largest ecological protection projects - has had a major impact on the lives of Tibetan nomadic herders.

Paleogene monsoons across India and South China: Drivers of biotic change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Monsoonal climates at low latitudes (2. Fossil leaf form reveals that under such 'hothouse' conditions megathermal early Eocene to earliest Miocene forests were exposed to strong monsoonal climates typical of those experienced today arising from annual ...

Seasonal drivers of plant–soil–microbial community structure and functions in Western Himalayan grasslands, Pakistan

open access: yesGrassland Research, EarlyView.
Plant species richness was greater in summer in both alpine and subalpine grassland ecosystems. Soil moisture demonstrates significant positive correlations with soil organic carbon and total nitrogen across seasonal periods. Microbial α‐diversity peaks during summer but maintains functional stability across seasons.

The Significant Impact of Lost Species' Identity, Number and Abundance on Functional Structure of Alpine Meadow

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Biodiversity, the cornerstone of ecosystem functions and services, faces threats from anthropogenic climate change. However, it remains unclear how species loss, including abundance, number, and identity of lost species, would alter the functional ...
