Hypotheses and generalizations put forward by ecologists are tacitly biased by the kind of ecosystem they are best acquainted with. This is probably inevitable. In this chapter I disclose my personal background: the tidal flats of Konigshafen, a sheltered bay on the island of Sylt in the eastern part of the North Sea (Fig. 5.1).
