No other choice: The fracturing of reflexivity in families' pathways into (non‐)elective home education in England

open access: yesBritish Educational Research Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract In England, education is compulsory, but schooling is not: it is legal for families to home educate their children. This form of education is officially termed by the Department for Education as ‘Elective Home Education’. As this designation implies, many families home educate as a positive and preferential ‘choice’.

There is no six-year periodicity in tidal forcing

open access: yesScientific Reports
The El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of the most important interannual modulations of Earth’s climate, and efforts to improve ENSO forecasting are most welcome. Lin and Qian1 (hereafter LQ19) offer an intriguing tidal connection, which, if correct, brings in a highly deterministic component that could simplify and improve forecasts.

Erwin Schrödinger und die Versuchungen der (Wissenschafts‐)Biografik: Vorurteilsgefüge und Mechanismen der Skandalisierung

open access: yesBerichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte, EarlyView.
Since late 2021, serious allegations have been made against physicist Erwin Schrödinger, ranging from pedophilia to serial sexual abuse. These accusations have significantly tarnished the Nobel Prize winner's public reputation. The ongoing debate has repeatedly raised the question of whether, and to what extent, these grave allegations are justified ...

Microtopography enhances intestinal drug absorption via Piezo1‐mediated tight junction modulation

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Microtopography‐driven enhancement of oral peptide drug delivery by activating Piezo1 channels significantly improves paracellular permeability and bioavailability, offering a novel approach for optimizing macromolecule absorption in pharmaceutical formulations.

The influence of rivers on seabird foraging ecology

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rivers act as vital arteries to the world's oceans, delivering fresh water and nutrients that sustain marine ecosystems. Globally, river flow increasingly is being altered by climate change and anthropogenic pressures; yet the significance of rivers to predatory marine species, such as seabirds, and the extent to which river‐related changes ...

Are symmetric tidal streams possible with long-range dark-matter forces? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The unique dynamics of the tidal disruption of satellite galaxies is an extremely sensitive probe of long-range interactions between dark-matter particles.

Extent, characteristics and policy applications of Key Biodiversity Areas

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A global standard for the identification of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) was published 10 years ago to provide a unified set of criteria for identifying ‘sites of significance for the global persistence of biodiversity’. We review the initiative's origins, the KBA identification process, characteristics of the current network, threats, policy

Next-day largest earthquake magnitude forecasting with the aid of Moon tidal force and sunspot data

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Complexity
Seismicity is a complex phenomenon with a multitude of components involved. In order to perform forecasting, which has yet to be done sufficiently well, it is paramount to be in possession of information of all these components, and use this information ...
