Tidal interactions in star cluster simulations [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2001
ABSTRA C T We describe the implementation of tidal circularization of binaries in an N-body code for star cluster simulations. The first part contains the theoretical framework for normal and chaotic tidal interactions, including capture from hyperbolic orbits. This formulation yields convenient expressions which are used to modify the binary elements.

Respiratory Organ‐on‐a‐Chip for Disease Modeling: From Architecture to Functional Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Respiratory organ‐on‐a‐chip (ROC) models capture key mechanical and cellular cues of the human respiratory system, enabling quantitative dissection of disease mechanisms. This review links ROC architectures to disease modeling, functional integration, and commercialization, and proposes a decision framework that aligns model complexity with mechanistic

Distinguishing Boson Stars from Black Holes and Neutron Stars from Tidal Interactions in Inspiraling Binary Systems

open access: yes, 2017
Binary systems containing boson stars---self-gravitating configurations of a complex scalar field--- can potentially mimic black holes or neutron stars as gravitational-wave sources.

Hydrogel‐Based Airway‐on‐Tube With Perfusable Endothelial Lumen and Outward Epithelialization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A hydrogel‐based airway‐on‐tube platform featuring a perfusable endothelial lumen and outward epithelialization is presented. The system supports primary human bronchial epithelial and lung microvascular endothelial coculture under air‐liquid interface conditions.

Spatial and temporal variability and long-term trends in skew surges globally

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2016
Storm surges and the resulting extreme high sea levels are among the most dangerous natural disasters and are responsible for widespread social, economic and environmental consequences. Using a set of 220 tide gauges, this paper investigates the temporal

Rational Tuning of Hygroscopic Oscillation of Stacked Nanoflake Assemblies for Continuous Ambient Energy Harvesting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Stacked nanoflake assembly (SNA) membranes can oscillate autonomously, offering opportunities for soft actuation and energy harvesting. This work uncovers the physical mechanism behind the sustained oscillation of SNA membranes in gradient humidity and identifies three governing dimensionless parameters, enabling rational design for optimizing SNA ...

A Novel Method to Constrain Tidal Quality Factor from A Nonsynchronized Exoplanetary System

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We propose a novel method to constrain the tidal quality factor, $Q^{\prime} $ , from an observed nonsynchronized star–planet system consisting of a slowly rotating low-mass star and a close-in Jovian planet, taking into account the coevolution of ...

Tidal Hydrodynamics in the Lower Columbia River Estuary through Depth Averaged Adaptive Hydraulics Modeling

open access: yesJournal of Engineering, 2014
The adaptive hydraulics (AdH) numerical code was applied to study tidal propagation in the Lower Columbia River (LCR) estuary. The results demonstrate the readiness of this AdH model towards the further study of hydrodynamics in the LCR.

Tidal Spin-up of Black Hole Progenitor Stars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Gravitational wave observations indicate the existence of merging black holes (BHs) with high spin ( a ≳ 0.3), whose formation pathways are still an open question.
