Hybrid Simulation–Machine Learning Surrogates for Coordinate‐Based Solar and Wind Energy Yield Assessment in Iraq: A Streamlit Decision‐Support Tool

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
This study integrates climatic simulations with machine learning to predict solar and wind energy across Iraq. Results show Random Forest excels for solar (R2 = 0.98) and neural networks for wind (R2 = 0.97), enabling a practical web tool for renewable energy planning. ABSTRACT Driven by the global shift away from fossil fuels, solar and wind resources

Runnels mitigate marsh drowning in microtidal salt marshes

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2022
As a symptom of accelerated sea level rise and historic impacts to tidal hydrology from agricultural and mosquito control activities, coastal marshes in the Northeastern U.S.

The German Soil Systematics and the Rationale Behind Its Revision

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background The German Soil Systematics is a pedogenetic classification based on the morphological expressions of pedogenic processes and has been developed over several stages since 1952. The system has successfully been in use for soil classification and soil survey for almost 70 years.

Recovery of great blue herons (Ardea herodias) within the Chesapeake Bay

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We surveyed great blue herons throughout the tidal reach of the Chesapeake Bay in 2013 and mapped 423 colonies supporting 15,094 pairs. The population has increased more than four‐fold since the mid‐1970s. Colony size has declined. Invasion of colonies by bald eagles may be driving a change in spatial structure.

Low speed doubly salient permanent magnet generator with passive rotor for a tidal current turbine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents a low speed permanent magnet generator that can be associated with a tidal turbine. This structure has a passive rotor which leads to a simple and robust structural solution. The principle of operation and an electromecanical model of

Tidal Marsh Restoration Optimism in a Changing Climate and Urbanizing Seascape

open access: yes, 2021
Tidal marshes (including saltmarshes) provide remarkable value for many social (cultural, recreational) and environmental (fish production, water quality, shoreline protection, carbon sequestration) services.

Sea-level rise in a coastal marsh: linking increasing tidal inundation, decreasing soil strength and increasing pond expansion [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences
Coastal marsh conversion into ponds, which may be triggered by sea-level rise, is considered an important driver of marsh loss and their valuable ecosystem services.

Storage treatment and diluent cause inconsistencies in commonly used fluorometric microplate enzyme assays conducted with saltmarsh soils

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Fluorometric enzyme assays are a tool for determining potential enzyme activity in soils. A wide array of methodological approaches is adopted by different studies, making comparisons difficult. An important consideration is whether assay conditions replicate the environment of the samples or optimize potential enzyme activity.

Bio-geomorphic patterns in tidal environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In times of natural and anthropogenic climate change, tidal bio-geomorphic systems are most exposed to possibly irreversible transformations with far-reaching ecological and socio-economic implications.
