Quantifying the Drivers of Star Formation on Galactic Scales. I. The Small Magellanic Cloud

open access: yes, 2003
We use the star formation history of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) to place quantitative limits on the effect of tidal interactions and gas infall on the star formation and chemical enrichment history of the SMC. The coincident timing of two recent (<

Tidal Triggering of Seyfert Galaxies and Quasars: Physical Sufficiency [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1987
Excess optical and radio emission in nuclei of Seyfert galaxies and quasars is observationally related to nearby companions. Dahari found Seyferts are more strongly perturbed tidally by companions than normal spirals are. QSO data suggests a similar relationship. Quasar and Seyfert activity are thought to be fueled by gas inflow to the nucleus.

Neuronal Cholesterol Deficiency Mediated by Astrocytic SREBP2 Downregulation Leads to Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction Through Impairment of Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity and Excitatory Synaptic Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The results showed that the reduction of plasma 24‐hydroxycholesterol (24‐OHC) was related to the cognitive decline in elderly surgical patients. Neuroinflammation induced by anesthesia and surgery significantly downregulated SREBP2 in hippocampal reactive astrocytes, resulting in reduced cholesterol synthesis.

The effect of earth tides as observed in seismo-electromagnetic precursory signals [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2009
Studies on the effect of earth tides in triggering earthquakes (EQs) had a great progress in recent years, which has provided convincing evidence of earth tides in EQ triggering.

Preconditioning and triggering of offshore slope failures and turbidity currents revealed by most detailed monitoring yet at a fjord-head delta [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Rivers and turbidity currents are the two most important sediment transport processes by volume on Earth. Various hypotheses have been proposed for triggering of turbidity currents offshore from river mouths, including direct plunging of river discharge,

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models for Cancer Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Cancer immunotherapy faces challenges in predicting treatment responses and understanding resistance mechanisms. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) offer powerful solutions for cancer immunotherapy in patient stratification, biomarker discovery, treatment strategy optimization, and foundation model development.

Starbursts versus Truncated Star Formation in Nearby Clusters of Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We present long-slit spectroscopy, B and R bandpass imaging, and 21 cm observations of a sample of early-type galaxies in nearby clusters which are known to be either in a star-forming phase or to have had star formation which recently terminated.

A Tidal Trigger of Starburst or Seyfert Activity [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1996
Some of the classical seyferts are observed to be prototypical ovals, e.g. NGC 1068 and 4151 (e.g., Bosma 1981; Kormendy 1982; Scoville et al. 1988). Such a non-axisymmetric potential corresponding to an oval disk can produce inward flow of gas and induce mild activity.

Tidally triggered galaxy formation. I - Evolution of the galaxy luminosity function [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1991
Motivated by accumulating evidence that large-scale galactic star formation is initiated and sustained by tidal interactions, a phenomenological model is developed for the galaxy luminosity function, commencing from a galaxy mass function that is predicted by a hierarchical model of structure formation such as the cold dark matter dominated cosmology ...

Review: Insight on Porous Carbon Positive Electrode for Sodium‐Ion Capacitors: Interplay Between Synthesis, Properties, and Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sodium ion capacitor (SIC) is currently constrained by the low discharge capacity of commercial activated carbon as positive electrode material. This review provides a holistic summary of research efforts on alternative porous carbon materials for SIC. Image created by the authors with www.biorender.com.
