Rapid Decay of a Timber Footbridge and Changes in Its Modal Frequencies Derived from Multiannual Lateral Deflection Measurements

Journal of Bridge Engineering, 2014
AbstractLateral deflections of a timber pedestrian bridge in Patras, Greece, excited by pedestrians were measured using a robotic total station (RTS) in six annual surveys. Analysis of the data indicated a drop of 1.6 Hz in the natural frequencies of the bridge between 2007 and 2008 and then a gradual drop of approximately 8% between 2008 and 2012 ...

Dynamic identification of a timber footbridge subject to vibration tests

2008
Over the last thirty years timber bridges and footbridges have been found considerable use especially by their versatility, good durability and pleasing aesthetic view. First the development of new technology and materials, as the laminated timber, second the use of innovative building, assembling and connection techniques and third the expansion of ...

On site dynamic test of a long span timber footbridge

2002
In this paper in situ dynamic test results on a long span timber footbridge are reported. As a result of evident flexibility of the structure not taken into account for during the design phase, the test engineer required a dynamic test just after footbridge concluding, with the aim to get realistic values of the main dynamic performances so as to ...

Forced vibration tests carried out on a laminated timber footbridge: comparisons five years apart

2008
The aim of this work concerns the analysis and comparison of those modal parameters which are obtained by assessing two forced vibration tests, experienced on a laminated timber footbridge. The two tests were carried out five years apart to verify if the dynamic characteristics of the structure change considerably during its use.

"Prestressed glued laminated timbers: a new structural material suitable to be applied in footbridge topics"

2005
A new structural material made applying a prestressing force to the traditional glued laminated timbers is here presented. The consequent technology, applied to the field of the civil engineering, permits to build slender and aesthetic structures, which are particularly suitable to place in urban and protected areas.
