Rhythmic Structure Shapes Dyadic Self−Other Representations Through Interpersonal Action Coupling
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Volume 1562, Issue 1, August 2026.Musical rhythms can imply multiple interpretations of the beat, allowing various ways of moving together. Dyads drummed to songs, producing rhythmic ratios varying the relative temporal complexity of their movements. Stable coordination increased social bonding, which decreased with complexity.

In harmony, intervals like the octave (2:1) and fifth (3:2) predict consonance and ease of encoding. In rhythm, patterns with simple ratios (e.g., 2:1, 3:2) are easier to perceive, reproduce, and remember.
