Invited Article: Acousto-optic finite-difference frequency-domain algorithm for first-principles simulations of on-chip acousto-optic devices

open access: yesAPL Photonics, 2017
We introduce a finite-difference frequency-domain algorithm for coupled acousto-optic simulations. First-principles acousto-optic simulation in time domain has been challenging due to the fact that the acoustic and optical frequencies differ by many ...

Denoising of Brillouin Gain Spectrum Images for Improved Dynamic Measurements of BOTDR

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2023
Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) is widely used for strain and temperature measurements in various fields. However, the accuracy and reliability of the measurements are often limited by the noise in the sensor signals.

Temperature-dependent elastic constants of thorium dioxide probed using time-domain Brillouin scattering

open access: yesJournal of Applied Physics, 2023
We report the adiabatic elastic constants of single-crystal thorium dioxide over a temperature range of 77–350 K. Time-domain Brillouin scattering, an all-optical, non-contact picosecond ultrasonic technique, is used to generate and detect coherent acoustic phonons that propagate in the bulk perpendicular to the surface of the crystal.

Vibrational spectra in glasses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
The findings of X-ray and neutron scattering experiments on amorphous systems are interpreted within the framework of the theory of Euclidean random matrices. This allows to take into account the topological nature of the disorder, a key ingredient which

Nondestructive characterization of polycrystalline 3D microstructure with time-domain Brillouin scattering

open access: yesScripta Materialia, 2019
Abstract We employ gigahertz frequency ultrasonic waves to non-invasively image grain microstructure in polycrystalline ceria. This technique, termed time-domain Brillouin scattering (TDBS), is a pump-probe technique that launches and monitors ultrasonic waves as they propagate into the sample. We demonstrate TDBS's capability to image microstructure

Research on the System of Pulse Synthesis Pre-pump Rayleigh BOTDA technology

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2015
The conventional Rayleigh scattering Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (Rayleigh BOTDA) system adopted the leakage light ahead of the pump pulse to generate Rayleigh back-scattering light.

Ultra-Narrow Bandwidth Microwave Photonic Filter Implemented by Single Longitudinal Mode Parity Time Symmetry Brillouin Fiber Laser

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
In this paper, a novel microwave photonic filter (MPF) based on a single longitudinal mode Brillouin laser achieved by parity time (PT) symmetry mode selection is proposed, and its unparalleled ultra-narrow bandwidth as low as to sub-kHz together with ...

Valley Hall effect in disordered monolayer MoS2 from first principles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Electrons in certain two-dimensional crystals possess a pseudospin degree of freedom associated with the existence of two inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone.

Research on the Cable Sag On-line Monitoring Using Spontaneous Brillouin Scattering

open access: yesGuangtongxin yanjiu, 2023
To improve transmission line load capacity and prevent power grid accidents, an online sag monitoring system for overhead transmission lines based on spontaneous Brillouin scattering is designed using the principles of Brillouin scattering and coherent ...
